[ot]Roll up the sleeves for some very serious recoding, the 6.10 client able to handle it, but don't know how many threads. Then, would not be able to tell how losslesssmpends up to be for what we do, a rather light in memory footprint application. [/ot]

Hm,
While I have no problems with the concept, it would mean that I'll get out of HCMD2 and would take HCC as project next to DDDT2 for now. Small average runtime combined with small buffers => more frequent calls for WU => more chance to get DDDT2 => faster badge. I saw the picture Sekerob made with the balls. I assume some balls would receive a boost in a semi random direction away from the center, since I doubt I'm the only one who made the above reasoning. |

Think you misunderstand and missed the option bit in the title.
----------------------------------------Saying no would not make 1 iota of difference so those have zero need to vote here. The base 6 hour / 60% progress cutoff jobs will remain... it's a strict second path opt-in to work on this project and just do all positions packaged in a task, how ever many there are.

Sek, unfortunately the comparisons between two molecules does not allow for the "chopper" to get a proper estimated split, even based on 10 months of data. Because the comparisons are between two molecules things could be different on each one. Also, the 100+ hour work units were on all types of machines.
But if what you're suggesting is to have just normal 8 hour work units and let them run to completion on 24/7 machines? Maybe stop them after 48 hours at a max? The reason the shorter work units on the 6/12 work units for HCMD2 is that members with machines that aren't on but maybe 8 hours a week can complete a task within the deadline. -Uplinger |

Please remember this is just a discussion about possible improvements to the system. It does not mean anything will be implemented, but if there is one that seems like it'll improve the grid performance, we usually look into how much work it will take, as our time is very limited.
----------------------------------------Edit: Also, I am engaged in this conversation to get a better idea on what the details on the improvement would be. -Uplinger (Edit...Added engaged line -uplinger) [Edit 1 times, last edit by uplinger at Feb 22, 2010 4:25:50 PM] |

The second type of opt-in packages was for the reason to protect the part time crunchers. Anything that creates a very high chance that the full set of positions gets completed and as said, would not care if it took 3 days. The checkpointing frequency allows for resumption after a boot very close from where left off.
----------------------------------------Btw if not already done, can we get a result log entry that signifies the 6 / 12 hour cut-off similar to what's seen in RICE? running time: 25218.281250 < this one with maybe the word limit added as in running time limit : 25218.281250? thnx for your considerations. edit: usually engaged ends up to be married ;D

Average number of positions completed per hour across all platforms over say last 30 days times 12 hours = number of positions per wu and let em rip. some jobs will be longer, some will be shorter, in the end the "Average" will be approx 12 hrs ;) Then even if you hit a long one on a slow box should finish in 60-70 hours. Side benifit no more need to generate child, grandchild, etc and all crunch time counts.

Indeed, I missed the "option" part.
----------------------------------------Actually, in an environment with no imminent beta's, upcoming projects and semi intermittent projects I'd have absolutely no objection to longer work units. Even at this moment, there are other projects that can be changed to so really no problem. If I switch inside WCG, then WCG makes certain my part gets done by other crunchers. The science gets done. No idea if possible at all, but Rosetta has a fun thingy where the CPUtime duration can be set. A multiple-choice setting, like target 2 hours, 4 hours, 8 hours, "let it rip" hours is both good for part-time and 24/7 crunchers. This is the moment where I sit back again to read instead of type Edit: CPU time instead of clocktime [Edit 1 times, last edit by rembertw at Feb 22, 2010 6:10:38 PM] |

I'd be in for this. As a brand new quad core user I can easily handle larger units if I wish.
If possible I'd ask you to consider doing this for all pertinent projects where it is obtainable. :) |
