Looking at that, I suppose I did not too bad with HDC considering.

Common tluehr, no crying over spilled milk. We did not even know the amount of CPU time per project on My Grid. Memory not telling me if badges came first [think it was], then the information per project, but initially there was just the base badge for 14 days. The levels came later. Here's timeline and that suggests there was nothing to switch to but continuing on FAAH/HPF2 for a period of time when the 'missed' had concluded. That is so true Sek. Back when I started crunching I did not think that it mattered what I was crunching, only that I was crunching. I definitely would have "managed" my crunching differently had the current levels existed back then. Who knows what I would have done differently. As you correctly point out, it was some time before we were able to see our time per project. I only got 3 days of crunching completed on Genome Comparison before it ended and none on HDC. Being an ex-gridder who was there when the doors were found locked, I did not want to run the UD agent again (it felt dirty). Thus I am a little "miffed" when some tout the levels that were awarded posthumously. September 24, 2008 Silver/Bronze/Gold were added. Higher levels came July 24, 2009 Cheers ![]() ![]() |

Hmm....I think the intention for my posting was not understood as it was meant.![]() I did not want to moan about the missed badge levels. I just wanted to show that probably a lot of people here have missed one or the other better badge for whatever reason, and proved that with my examples. I am happy to have at least one of each badge. And it is correct that back in those days we did not know about badges and even could not see our contribution for each project, so it was impossible to manage the contribution in such a detailed way to certain levels. |

That's your line: "But it is annoying to see how close I was to the next level.", but as fortune had it, you've got all 16 :D

I missed a few projects as well. I'm pretty happy with the projects i did crunch as it was difficult to run dual cores with the UD agent. I was hoping to get a sapphire badge here and go back to my normal projects and shut off a few crunchers again.

[rant] There have been some postings in these forums about having "all" the badges and such as if they had always existed. Those who have them definitely earned them and I don't want to take away from that. But how could one have managed their crunching to obtain a badge when they didn’t exist. Even now it is hard to collect these badges, such as on this project. Some have reported getting hundreds of DDDT2 WUs and are already at the gold level, while some are still trying to download their first job. Some will say "not to worry, it is early in the project", which is true, but that does not ease the disappointment of those that wish to join the competition but are forced to sit on the sidelines. In the case of the completed projects; didn’t know that the competition existed. [rant/] The badges are fun though and I wouldn't want it to end. Cheers ![]() ![]() |

This is part of what I was trying to address in my suggestion about badges for completing one valid result. (https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,28673)
----------------------------------------Which I see you've been to already Nix. I was one of those people crunching long before there was such a thing as a badge. I never bothered to direct my crunching power towards any project in particular because I saw the worth in them all and I trusted the grid to use my computers as they saw fit. While the pursuit of badges does increase interest and competition, the absolute pursuit of a badge at all costs does not benefit anyone. That's why I put the suggestion out there to begin with. I think it would help to alleviate some of the more rampant work hoarding. (Not all, of course, but it all helps.) ![]() Distributed computing volunteer since September 27, 2000 |

I never bothered to direct my crunching power towards any project in particular because I saw the worth in them all and I trusted the grid to use my computers as they saw fit. Sure, but all of us may have different opinions and personal reasons regarding the crunch-worthiness of the various projects. This means that it is important to leave to the members the choice to target their crunching efforts on a specific project or on all or part of the projects as they seem fit. While the pursuit of badges does increase interest and competition, the absolute pursuit of a badge at all costs does not benefit anyone. That's why I put the suggestion out there to begin with. I think it would help to alleviate some of the more rampant work hoarding My point of view here is that the absolute pursuit of a badge will have no effect in that grand scheme of the grid. Simply because of the variety of systems available all members are at different stages, and all crunch different mixes of projects, and so on the whole all is flattened and there is no risk that at a given moment all members at the same time do crunch for one project to get one specific badge. As the number of members increase this risk decreases. ![]() ![]() |

I may get a bronze beta badge thanks to this project
---------------------------------------- . I have to admit the badges to get me to venture to other projects and maybe fire up an extra machine or 4 that I may not be running otherwise.Good luck :) ![]() |

While the pursuit of badges does increase interest and competition, the absolute pursuit of a badge at all costs does not benefit anyone. Hmmm, I was crunching at UD then here, then the badges came along... I was motivated to tweak machine/settings etc... but now I'm buying 64 bit versions of software, extra RAM, even overclocking a bit... Would I do it if the science didn't matter (SETI for instance)? Prob not. but Badges spark the competitive bug in me. ![]() |
