The Scotch Whisky collector's and amateur corner

I feel there is a deep visceral need for this thread. From what started on the Website Support forum about it, here is the right place where everybody can give his opinions, dreams, experiences about Scotch Whisky, about Whiskey, Bourbon but also Irish, Japanese or other ones.

What about Port Ellen 6th release 25 year old. I find it excellent, and as I have only one bottle of it I have to be extremely careful about consumption. praying
As you probably know Port Ellen distillery does not exist any more and only the existing stock is used through timely releases. Once you finished the bottle it is really finished. wink

Oh, another Islay fan ;-).
From the still existing Islay destilleries, I like an older Laphroaig or Ardbeg as well as a non chillfiltered Caol Ila - this one has the "cleanest" taste of the Whiskys of that small Island.

I agree for the Laphroaig. I love the salty seawater background. I tried a 15 year but the 10 is better. The best nevertheless is a 30 year that I had the occasion to drink many years ago in Copenhagen and since then I tried to find it again but without success.

The Caol Ila is excellent too I agree. I have a 10 year and a special edition.

Another one I tasted recently that has a very creamy soft touch is the Glencadam 15 years. I discovered that one a week ago and you really should try it.

Now this is a thread I can get into biggrin
I agree, Bunnahabhain 18 and even the 12 is a very good Scotch.
Recently I tried Balvenie 17 Year Rum Cask Finish. 99 bucks US. Very supprised how nice it was. It's smooth and fruity with a touch of vanila on the finish. smile

Re: The Scotch Whisky collector's and amateur corner

Today it is really an awful day for business travellers. Flights cancelled all over due to bad weather. My first flight was cancelled, frustrated took a second registered and then it was cancelled frustrated frustrated , this killed the 3 day week-end in Nice with my wife. Took a third to home, we decided St. Valentine will be better at home (you know cocooning) and now I am waiting like sitting duck hoping that they will not shoot me with a cancelled again.
You imagine what I did. To compensate for my despair I went and bought a Glenmorangie X Rare 18 years old (80 Euros). Unfortunately I can't taste it but as soon as I am home ( praying praying praying ) you will get the picture and my comments.

For those who know there is on CNN the Business Traveller edition from Richard Quest. That is a dream: travels in 1st class, stays in palaces, private jets, limo's etc. etc. Ok that way, no problem, I will travel all year long. Then I go back to earth and they just announced delay because even if the plane is there, the crew that is coming from the moon is late (the space shuttle hasn't landed yet) and due to icing they must cover the plane with alcohol. I hide my Glenmorangie otherwise they might use it biggrin .

Re: The Scotch Whisky collector's and amateur corner

On inspection, I found someone opened my priced special reserve Lochnagar wooden cased bottle, collectors item sitting in the cabinet for nearly 30 years and took a shot glass quantity out, making sure to re-seat the cork-cap carefully... yet seal broken forever. Now it's worthless, but to drink it... whiskey not maturing once bottled. It will be an evening of "could I have funded a dual socket with it or a cruise for 2?"

Better wait a few days to let the peed by an 2 orders of magnitude wear off and enjoy the experience on the pallet.

Re: The Scotch Whisky collector's and amateur corner

I have the possibility to buy a 30 year of age BRORA bottle but as it is pretty expensive (about 300 Euros) I hesitate. thinking
If any of you have already tasted Brora whisky, even if not 30 years, I am interested to have your opinion. biggrin
