i am trying to set up a GPUGRID project alongside my WCG project in BOINC. i figured it could benefit from my GPU without impacting too much on WCG. i'm having a rather protracted elderly moment trying to configure the client to stop using the GPU when i play a game. The following is my current cc_config file...
----------------------------------------<cc_config> <options> [<exclusive_gpu_app>Borderlands.exe</exclusive_gpu_app>] [<exclusive_gpu_app>witcher.exe</exclusive_gpu_app>] [<exclusive_gpu_app>rfg_launcher.exe</exclusive_gpu_app>] [<exclusive_gpu_app>Peggle.exe</exclusive_gpu_app>] [<exclusive_gpu_app>BmStartApp.exe</exclusive_gpu_app>] [<exclusive_gpu_app>Torchlight.exe</exclusive_gpu_app>] [<exclusive_gpu_app>Runes of Magic.exe</exclusive_gpu_app>] </options> </cc_config> i've tried putting in the whole watchamacallit to the executables with no joy. i'd appreciate some feedback, although it hasn't had any impact on the games performance. Funny that. :) [Some good games there.] [Edit 1 times, last edit by Mungoe at Jan 14, 2010 10:57:30 AM] |

Funny that. :) [Some good games there.] The file, content corrected above, has to be in the data_dir. That location is printed in your message log at the beginning. You have to restart BOINC or read in the config via the BOINC Manager Advanced menu. Full help on formatting the config file is found via our FAQ's going to http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?language=1&view=91 If the elderly moments protracts further, prep for acquiring additional support items or go to GPUgrid, where the experts are in configuring the GPU use for BOINC :D PS: Depending on what version of BOINC, be prepared for moments where you'll see 1 or more cores idling even when your games are not loaded. Reports on this continue to show on various support boards who are doing GPU crunching.

Maybe this can help.
----------------------------------------On the machines which are not exclusively devoted to WCG but also used for personal work, or gaming, I set up Boinc so that it is immediately supended when someone uses the machine, that is just moving the mouse. Once finished using the PC just leave it and maybe switch the display off if you leave it for the night or long periods. After a preset idle time that you have entered has expired (ex. 1 minute in my case) BOINC will activate the crunching tasks again. You can even tell Boinc to keep tasks in memory to have the fastest possible switch. But if you have little RAM (< 2GB) available and need it for your applications then do not do it otherwise the system may start swapping pages on disk virtual memory and slow down. If you are in a project where GPU is used this suspension system will perform the same. I find this way of doing the best to switch on and off losing as little time as possible. ![]() |

Generally the default setup for GPU crunching is not to employ the GPU when the computer is in use. That's a setting found in the client preferences.

You can even tell Boinc to keep tasks in memory to have the fastest possible switch. If you really like to suspend BOINC when somebody is using the machine you better select "Leave Application in Memory when suspended" (LIM). Not only "to have the fastest possible switch" but moreover to let BOINC a chance to progress. Otherwise each time the user pauses for one minute (in your case) BOINC will have to restart all tasks completely and resume at the latest checkpoints. For projects which don't checkpoint very often that will mean restarting at the same checkpoints again and again. With LIM On the OS will unload only the RAM missing for your work, then when BOINC will go on only these chunks of memory will have to be reloaded from the swapfile and the task(s) will go on exacly where they were when they had been interrupted. Note that with 2 GB a quad running WCG projects has much RAM left for usual human activity. For video editing, big games, etc... that may not be enough, I agree. Cheers. Jean. |

Jean, that is exactely what I do. I have the "Leave applications in memory" set. With 12 GB RAM I have really no problems at all. All my applications can coexist happily in memory. In fact I have not yet succeeded to fill the 12 GB even with softwares like 3dsMax with large models, plus photoshop with many large pictures at once, in addition to the office package.
----------------------------------------For long time we never had enough of RAM and disk space. Now the memory technology has achieved to be in front of us and not playing catch up. Example USB keys with 128 GB. Still a little expensive but just imagine that it is equivalent to 128'000 floppy disks. We are now in opposite situation were we have to find ways to use this vast amounts of memory in an intelligent way , available at low cost: A 2TB disk can be found easily at 120 Euros or about 180 US$ and even less than that. ![]() ![]() |

With 12Gb RAM start with what I mentioned in other thread, to completely disable the pagefile/virtual memory function. Last night 7 jobs completed with a 99.75% full run time efficiency according BOINCTasks and during day time only 3-5 minutes on 7 hours is going to user time.

i've been running the client whenever the computer is being used with no impact at all on my other activities. Well none that i notice.
That's with Intel Core 2 Duo E8400, 4Gb RAM and Win7 64x. i wanted to experiment with the GPU doing some useful work and thanks to your advice it's working like a dream now. The client keeps running the WCG tasks, but switches off the GPUGRID as soon as i fire up a game and switches it back on soon as i exit game. Superb! |
