Within the last month, my computer started having all kinds of problems such as unable to shutdown, prompts by Norton Internet Security 2005 personal firewall to permit UD.EXE on every startup, NIS2005 hanging when trying to add the UD.EXE program to the list of permitted programs, etc.
I finally was able to solve all problems by removing WorldCommunityGridAgent from my two home systems. Both systems now shutdown correctly. I am the leader of a good WCG team, but I can't tolerate the incompatibility with NIS2005 so I am having to quit WCG unless there is a quick fix. A search on Symantec site says to permit the UD server (what name?) on a couple of ports, but trying this just hangs NIS every time, forcing a hard power off reboot to recover. I'm running WinXP SP2 with everything current and NIS2005 with everything current. |

Here are the instructions for configuring ZoneAlarm firewall: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=netconn#69
Did you try to set server.worldcommunitygrid.org as a Safe Zone? Just when do things hang? mycrofth |

Hi Allan,
I use on my four machines AVG 7.0. At the job I use the Network version (of course) and at home the free version. Both sets of computers are placed behind a Linux based Internetserver connected to an DSL connection. I added to this the Zonealarm firewall, instructed to let the agent go it's own way and no problems at all. You can download the AVG free Anti Virus software from their Website www.grisoft.com. The older AVG 6.0 was not so good but this one is! |

Hi Allen O
I have been running WinXP with SP2 and NIS2005 Version 8.0.2.5 for the last 4 months and I have not had one single issue with this combination, affecting the grid agent Do you have your personal firewall set to medium or high and do you have all your unused ports stealthed Under NIS Program Control, have you set your Internet Access for UD.exe to automatic |

Did you remember to disable the Windows firewall which comes with XP SP2? If you have two firewalls running at the same time, strange things can happen.
When you used the Symantec package, did you install everything using the default configurations? If not, what did you change in the configuration. If we were to try to duplicate your setup for testing, we would need to know. Did you install the Symatec package after XP SP2 or before XP SP2? The post: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2674 lists the program names you are likely to see in the firewall pop-ups or configurations. They need to have outbound access on port 443 to server.worldcommunitygrid.org and be able to do a DNS lookup (which is a service that is usually not blocked). |
