Hello,
----------------------------------------Recently got my free student copy of windows server 2008 R2 through www.dreamspark.com ! i cannot find the link now, but I remember reading somewhere that all the WCG projects were actually 32-bit programs and thus can run on 64-bit operating systems but to no real advantage. Is this true? Hope not. Thanks for your replies in advance ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by adict2jane at Nov 24, 2009 11:36:08 PM] |

Dunno but the main thing is that it works.

Thanks for your response Vaio,
I guess I should have included in my first post "If the WCG apps run in 32-bit is there any advantage in running a 64-bit OS with the 64-bit version of BOINC?" Thanks, Matt |

I was told, rightly or wrongly that 64 bit was slightly more efficient...hence my purchase of Win 7 64.....plus 64 bit is "eventually" the way forward so it makes sense to start heading in that direction.

In my experience, I did not see any improvement in running 64-bit BOINC client. WU did not use any more RAM on 64-bit OS either.

I did not see any comments here about what versions of the BOINC software anyone is using with Win 7 64bit, successfully or unsuccessfully.
----------------------------------------I just started with Win 7 64bit, had a fair amount of problems, got a great amount of really good help, but am still not out of the woods. I am running the Win 7 64bit on an I7-920 with hyper-threading. I have already tried 6.2.28, the WCG release, and also 6.6.38 and 6.10.18. Also, apparently my nVidia chip will allow for GPU processing, which may be involved in my problems. So, any experiences, good or bad could be helpful to me and to others. I am not sure that any version is yet really up to the job, but I am technically challenged, so I may be off base. >>RSM |

I guess I should have included in my first post "If the WCG apps run in 32-bit is there any advantage in running a 64-bit OS with the 64-bit version of BOINC?" There is a real advantage in running the 32-bit WCG applications under a 64-bit OS. Depending on the applications it is between 15 and 30 % with a Q6600. I have no idea if it is also depending on which processor you use but I think that it may be the case: the benefit comes from the fact that all "optimized features" of the processor can be used with a 64-bit OS vs running in 32-bit mode, therefore the number of "optimized features" in your processor may not be the same as in a Q6600. I don't know if you need to use a 64-bit version of BOINC to get that benefit since BOINC itself is not doing the computations, but that would seem logical to install one anyway. Cheers. Jean. |

I am running wcg on ubuntu 9.04 64 bit and have seen an improvement of performance from xp 32 bit.
I have three machines running wcg and two are pretty much dedicated. I switched one to ubuntu 64 bit and immediately notice a increase in the wus returned. The "To Complete" time is always about 20-30% shorter than the 32 bit machines. One of the 32 bit machines even has a faster cpu. I don't think the difference between windows and ubuntu is what makes the 64 bit operating system faster, I think it is the difference in the 32 vs 64 bit. And for comparison, all three are AMD 790g chipsets and two have 810 cpus and one have 945. All have 4gb ram and the cpus are all AMD. The ubuntu os is running on an 810. All are running the same project. This is not by any means a scientific comparison, but 64 bit looks better to me if you are looking to increase your output. In fact I am considering changing another machine to 64 bit. Hope this helps. |

Have a look at:
64 bit version of FAAH application - up to 25% faster... https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/...041_lastpage,yes#lastpost If you are molecular scientist and are using Autodock or Vina you could help me out by providing test cases and/or test 64bit version of autodock. Thanks, Wojciech |
