I am also retiring two machines that will be refurbished as Windows 7 64 bit with each one Core I7 950 CPU. The two new ones will run 24/24 7/7 for number crunching. This means 16 parallel threads (work units) at anityme. In the past I just did cut the machines off and lost some of the jobs.
----------------------------------------This thread was helpful to allow me to do a smooth transition. By the way I have also two other machines running Windows 7 64 bit with one Core I7 950 and one Core I7 970. But these last two are only partly devoted to number crunching (unfortunately). In total this means that some time I manage to get 32 work units in parallel and the processors are fast. When the Core I9 will be available I plan to switch all the processors (the boards are all compatible) at once (the dream). This means I will jump to 48 threads per shot. WoW! ![]() |

Hypernova - you could configure your existing i7's locally to use a set amount of CPU cores.
If you set Boinc to use 75% of the CPU then it will run 6 threads. You would still be able to use the system for work. As Boinc threads run as low priority, when you use the system the Boinc threads will naturally pause running when you need to use the CPU. You can also right click on Boinc and Snooze, should you need to. |

Is there any chance I can get some good information about building a system with the best i7 I can get? I would like it to be a quad with some amount of additional processing either total by number of threads or otherwise.
As you can see, my knowledge in this area is sorely lacking. |

Hello dkt,
Movieman has the i7 down pat! I suggest you post your query ATTN: Movieman in Chat. Lawrence |

Just create a new thread in Chat - "Ping Movieman - fast CPUs"

skgiven thanks for info. I have already the two machines that are not for continuous number crunching, set up as follows.
----------------------------------------CPU usage is 100%, but only after 1 minute of idle. This means that after one minute of unused computer (drink a coffee etc.) WCG kicks in with 8 cores fully busy, and get suspended when someone is back. I keep also all the WU in RAM as there is enough for everybody with 12GB per machine. Hypernova ![]() |

DKT, are you specifically looking for a Quad core system (an i7 with its 8 threads), or a Quad socket system with four CPUs on one Server system, or just general advice on getting a good system for crunching?
Any i7 will make a significant contribution here. It is down to what you can afford/want to pay. You should note that you could build two i7-920 systems for the price of one i7-975 Extreme system! Although the i7-975 is faster with its higher clock and newer design, you could overclock an i7-920s to get the same performance as the i7-975, and save a substantial amount of money. That said, i7-975s overclock too and have an unlocked multiplier! I would not reccomend getting a server class quad system, as they would not be i7 based. A top end dual socket i7 system (Skulltrail) will do about the same amount of work as the top quad skt Xeon system but would cost less. Both are very expensive. I would prefer to have two i7s than one Skulltrail system. Next year, 1st Quarter I think, the 6-core i9s will be released. So you might just want to wait, and save! These will overclock too, but I would leave that to the Hexperts ![]() |

sigh this is makeing me feel bad with 3 single core computers and 1 dual core... oh about the original poste i wish ya lived close to me so i could drive over and salvage your retiring machines... i am still trying to rebuild 4 computers (3 are laptops) that have died... if i had the money to buy the NEW systems i might think about it but im not willin to invest that much money right now VS paying for other things that i want... for now
