I hardly think that you can characterize this as spam. OK, agreed, this is not strictly spam but that's the way people use to call anything looking like multiple posting here. And it is clear too that you did it with good intentions. By the way there is already one project (at least) which has its own place in Facebook. People from project Decrypthon (the scientists of HCMD2) have installed something in the French Facebook but I am not sure it is bringing tremendous results. There is not much activity on these pages and new members are not arriving en masse: over the last 30 days 257 new members have registered to WCG via the team, but only 75 have returned results. And nothing says that they were all coming from Facebook since the project also has e-cards and other features on its site. That does not even compensate the regular attrition of active members (-270 over the same period). But one can always say that it would be worse without Facebook.... ![]() Anyway, thanks for trying to find new ways, and thanks for your own contribution. Jean. |

Well, Jean, you are right. Who is to say that the Facebook application you guys are running did anything? The point is, you are trying the right way. You bring your project to people directly.
----------------------------------------I have no technical skills. So, what I try to bring is sales and marketing skills, that is my background. I also go after journalists who write up projects without ever mentioning BOINC or WCG or both. I am sitting here in the USA; but I was interviewed by some electronic press. I went after their writer when they carried a story first printed in a Chicago newspaper. I went after the Chicago paper too. The story was about a project and never mentioned BOINC - in this case it was a project not part of WCG. They wanted to know who I was and what I wanted. I told them I was just an ordinary cruncher pissed off at bad press and that all I wanted was for them to tell the complete story. I have BOINC and WCG URL's on my personal business cards. I seal my mail with labels I rpinted up with the BOINC and WCG icons. People ask me what it is all about, I tell them. No suasion, just information. Thy are afraid about security, I reassure them. So far, all of my efforts over about two years, have garnered about twenty people who I know; but, also, a bank of servers owned by a firm that I know which was impressed with one magazine piece I sent them. I mean, we need to keep trying to get new people. Does WCG have every possible CPU at IBM? Probably not. But IBM should be pushed for everything they can offer to this effort which they support and control. So, Ta-ta, mates. |

We're working on bringing the WCG Facebook app up to speed and it is scheduled to be deployed in a couple of weeks. We'll put something into the Member News forum when it goes out.
After that we'll solicit member feedback for future improvements to the Facebook app in the Suggestions/Feedback forum. Until then we don't have time to even review comments. I doubt we'll ever have a facebook app for each project. That's too labor intensive for our small team. But, we'll discuss the idea and see what we can come up with. Thanks for your input. |

bbovers,
----------------------------------------Look at Jim's post about Decrypthon. They did it on their own. Are they also defying rules? Cannot other far-flung projects take a lesson from theose folks and do this on their own. I will certainly now drift back into my little corner like a dust ball. >>RSM |

Geez, Ok...we get it. You would like to see this happen. Unfortunately the WCG team is a small one and have their hands full with day to day operations. This is also a "Suggestions" forum...not a "Make This Happen Now I Demand It By Spamming And Repeating" forum.
----------------------------------------I personally would like to see them bring on more projects instead of a "cool new app for Facebook". Granted, it may help exposure...a little...but it won't be dramatic. The best way to raise member contributions is by word of mouth from the current members. Look at Jim's post about Decrypthon. They did it on their own. Are they also defying rules? Well, I hesitated to provide a link, but since it is only in French I thought it would be frustrating for the majority. After your comment I change my mind and I provide it below to let everybody see that there is no possible confusion between WCG and this group (no need to read French). Project Decrypthon's "thingy" on facebook Joining WCG is done through Project Decrypthon's own site, link available under the Info tab. I hope it is more clear now. Jean. |

Jean-
----------------------------------------I just realized that I changed your name above to Jim. I apologize for the error. Your link is to Decrypthon's Facebook page, not the same as what WCG has on its own main page and the main page of each project. That is significantly different from what I am asking. I want that when I click on the "f", the project's main page would now have a link to *my* Facebook page, maybe a thumbnail picture, and a wee bit of description. That is what the "f" on WCG's main page does. |
