Re: Many thanks - Phase 1 now completed!

True - with my 1 dual-core machine, I'll be fortunate to reach Gold in both projects, especially if they start within a matter of days/weeks of each other....
What is wrong with earning a Gold badge? It is a fine accomplishment to achieve on a single C2D machine.

If PhaseII ends up being a fast project, than maybe the requirements for badges should be lowered as in the case of African Climate.

Absolutely nothing - in fact, reaching Gold in all available projects is my main goal (just got HCMD2 to finish now). Anything above that, is a bonus.

The point I was attempting to make, was that, with a project that's got a short estimate on it, there's not much "wriggle room" when it'll take at a bare minimum, 45 days to reach that first main milestone. If there's 2 projects running at the same time, both with a short estimated duration, things could be very tight - especially if (as I suspect), the mega-cruncher's will be seeking Sapphire and above in the shortest possible time...

I would like to thank our Researcher for updating us on the project.

Solid information like this helps some of us explain why our families should continue to contribute resources in electricity and additional expensive gear.

As we continue to "drop our pennies down the well" it is very welcome to hear the occasional splash.

A 6-month project is not a sprint, and it has nothing in common with the very particular AfricanClimate@Home project.

The IADS phase 1 project which has just ended has run for about 6 months and that means
2876 years and 3,848,185 results, and that is already much and enough to satisfy the most vocal badge hunters.
On the other hand AfricanClimate@Home has needed 33 years and 33,028 results and is more comparable to a few beta tests as far as its workload was concerned.

Also, generally speaking, the incidence of badge hunters on a project must not be overestimated: they are only a small subset of forum users which, themselves, are a small subset of the whole active WCG community. Therefore that leaves enough flexibility to WCG servers for balancing the distribution of all projects in a fair way.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: Many thanks - Phase 1 now completed!

While the above it is quite true it would be unprofessional for anyone at WCG to change priorities even based on mathmatical principle. That would, truthfully, be playing favorites. Also, who is to say that Influenza research should take priority over AIDS research, which in turn should take priority over Cancer research and so forth.
[...]
I just do not believe it is WCG's place to dictate which project has more value.

Totally agree. It was absolutely not my suggestion to change anything in the priority of the PROJECTS. However, changing the SCHEDULING priorities is a different thing. If you go back to my simple example of 2 projects, I have shown 2 extreme examples of scheduling. In one scheduling method project one finishes after 3 years, as does project two. In the other scheduling method project 2 still finishes after 3 years (absolutely no change), but project one finishes after one year already. This is nothing magic, but "simple" queueing theory. So yes, this might look unfair to project 2, as the other one benefits a lot from different scheduling, and project 2 does not. However, it still finishes at exactly the same time, and from an overall (humanity) prospective it would be a lot better, because there would be at least one project finishing after 1/3 of the time.

More information can be found here. And no, I don't think that this very scheduling mechanism should be applied to WCG, but it is just meant to show that there are more intelligent queueing mechanisms than just equal resource sharing, which might end up in a better overall value of WCG.

Regards,
Martin

According to the estimations made earlier in this thread, it will take a lot longer than Phase I (in terms of CPU years), so I cannot see the issue.

Martin

How will the new badge look like? Who creates this badge and who is deciding to select the right one?

I think the badge is the same, but will just have a 2 on it.
