Re: Daylight Saving Time

If you used UTC time everywhere, when it was midday in the UK, then it would also be midday wherever you are.........and it might even be dark.....very dark

Then midday does not have to be 12:00. Why cant your midday be 23:00?

Daylight saving time:Don't let the Scots steal this hour because they want a lie-in

Britain would be better off and lives would be saved if we had summer time all year round, writes Boris Johnson. ......

Keep the Time Change From Disrupting Your Rest With Sleep Formula 39

Daylight Saving Time comes to an end on Sunday, Nov. 6, and adjusting the clock will also mean altering sleep patterns. Sixty percent of Americans say that they experience a sleep problem every night or almost every night, according to the National Sleep Foundation's 2011 Sleep in America poll, and for those individuals the time change can further disrupt irregular sleep. wink

Re: Daylight Saving Time

Daylight saving is a waste of time

The only thing I hate more than daylight saving time is people who try to defend daylight saving time.
They are a public menace. I’ll set my clock back in the fall (I think) and forward in the spring. But I won’t like it. And I won’t like you if you do.
“Ben Franklin thought daylight saving time was a good idea!” these people say. “For farmers.”
Ben Franklin also thought that it was a good idea to make the turkey the national bird! Ben Franklin gave advice in something called Poor Richard’s Almanack. Why would you take advice from a guy who advertised how poor he was in the title? Especially if that advice consisted of things like “A Cat in Gloves Catches No Mice.” Who puts gloves on a cat?
But they don’t stop there.
“This saves energy and conserves light bulbs!”
We don’t work for light bulbs! They work for us! Now I have to leave work under the cover of darkness so that my light bulbs can sit at home living the high life? Just for that I intend to leave all the lamps blazing all night. “Daylight saving time, eh?” I will snarl. “LOOK AT ALL THE ENERGY I’M CONSERVING! WORK HARDER, LIGHT BULBS! WORK!”
“Have you slept in the past week?” people will quietly inquire, and I will admit that no, I have not.
“Daylight saving time was popular during World War I,” people say. “And we brought it back during World War II.”

Re: Daylight Saving Time

Well , some thinks to remember

Make time to check and replace the batteries in your smoke detectors.

Not all areas in the United States observe Daylight Savings Time. These include the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, Hawaii and most of Arizona except for the Navajo reservation.

While many people look forward to the extra hour of sleep, Daylight Savings Time can wreak havoc on our basic circadian rhythm (the body clock). It is easier to stay up an hour later than to go to sleep an hour earlier, health experts say. But there are some things that you can do to help your body adjust.

To sleep well, your body clock must be in sync with your daily schedule. What sets your body clock is mostly your wakeup time. Experts say there are several things you can do to adjust to the time change and ensure a good night's sleep.

A consistent wakeup time is the single best measure you can take for good sleeping habits. Don't vary your wake up time by more than one hour, even on weekends.

Remember that beds are for sleeping. Don't do anything that requires concentration in the bedroom. Even a TV in the bedroom is a bad idea for many people.

Forgo exercise right before bedtime, and don't go to bed on an empty stomach. Pass on caffeine and alcohol for several hours before bedtime, and try to wake up to natural light.

Finally, don't worry too much about your sleep--it just may keep you up at night.

Re: Daylight Saving Time

I'm not that against DST... It is a minor inconvenience, but it tolerable. I can understand that the main purpose is to take the most advantage of the day's sun light (which I agree with), but.... what I don't understand is the hype about the supposed savings that there is. I see no savings (either theoretically or physically). I turn my house lights on when it starts to get dark outside, not according to the time of day. So if I turn on certain lights for 4 hours in the evening during the Standard Time, then I will turn those same lights on for 4 hours in the evening during Day Light Saving time.
