Problems with Windows 7

I've been running Windows 7 since it was released on the Microsoft Developers website a few months back. When I first loaded 7 I came across an unusual problem on my laptop when running BOINC. The "CPU time" number would count up as usual but the "To Complete" time would stay fixed at 06:25:41. I figured it was just that Windows 7 was new and proper drivers had not been written yet; so I uninstalled BOINC and more or less forgot about it.

Since then, proper HP drivers have been released for my laptop, a new BOINC version has been released and Windows 7 has had a few updates. Since Windows 7 hits the shelves tomorrow, I figured now was as good a time as ever to try again with BOINC. I got it loaded and alas the problem remains.

Is this a known problem?

Re: Problems with Windows 7

Hi Briv

You need to post your start up log.
In Boinc Mgr go to messages tab and copy the first lines of the log down as far as "starting task ..."

There will be some advisers along shortly to help.

I should probably have mentioned that I tried loading the 64-bit version from the BOINC website and had the same problem.

Re: Problems with Windows 7

Hi, your setup looks fine and presume there are actually tasks running this moment. The TTC freezing is odd even when CPU time is counting, but more importantly, is the progress % incrementing?

Re: Problems with Windows 7

Ok, think we have to put you under the 3rd degree:

Is it different projects or are they all the same? What are your project choices?

Is there actual CPU time used when you view the processing in Task Manager?

Since there is zero progress, let's start by changing the project selection on My Projects and doing a project reset in the client so it fetches some different work, if it's all the same jobs... RICE or HPF2 e.g.

Forget it. I let it run for a little while and it's working now.

Glad it's fixed. cool

Just for reference, did a quick test with the currently active sub-projects, to see how long from start before %progress started to increase:
FightAids: 3m44s
Cancer: 2m
Rice: 1m12s
Childhood cancer: 36s
CMD2: 30s
Proteome folding: 1m12s (slower computer)

Since this is for single tasks, there's likely large variations between tasks. So wouldn't be surprised if some WCG-tasks will run for over 10 minutes before any changes to %progress.
