Hello,
----------------------------------------I just joined this community and I installed BOINC Manager 6.2.28. Currently I am running a task called Help Fight Childhood Cancer 6.10, but every time I restart the computer, the resets to 0, no matter what was before. Is this "normal", or a known issue or is just for me? Thank you. [Edit 1 times, last edit by marcelinocmb at Oct 11, 2009 4:52:11 PM] |

Welcome here marcelinocmb!
----------------------------------------It takes several minutes for the first checkpoint of a HFCC task to be taken (I had just one in my quad 6 minutes after the start of the WU). In a slower machine that can be a long time, so if it is your case and you run short sessions only in your machine it may happen that no checkpoint has been taken when you shutdown. Another case can be if you have configured your BOINC client for not running while you use the computer and if you have not selected Yes for the option "Leave applications in memory while preempted?" (LIM). In that case when you use the keyboard or the mouse BOINC stops and unload the running task which is supposed to restart at its latest checkpoint when you leave the computer idle. Other options which can lead to suspending tasks will have the same effect if the LIM option is set to NO, e.g. for a laptop normally set for not running while the laptop is using its batteries. Edit: I forgot to say: unless you are very short on physical memory and disk space for swapping we recommend setting the LIM option to Yes to avoid these losses of work. The operating system will recover the physical memory that the task was using if needed while it is suspended, but when resuming it will resume exactly where it was without any loss of processing. Please tell us more about your computer and the way you use it most of the time for us to evaluate if what you experience is normal or not. Read you later. Thank you for joining WCG. Jean. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by JmBoullier at Oct 11, 2009 6:06:18 PM] |

JmBoullier, thank you for your answer.
My computer has a AMD Ahtlon X2 4600+ (2.4 Ghz), 4 GB of RAM, 500 GB HDD and as Operating System is MS Windows 7 x32 Release Candidate. I use my computer 6-8 hours per day for my job and I would like set BOINC to work in parallel (currently I set it to use 80% of the CPU and maximum 10 GB hard drive). Where can I find that LIM setting? And how could I set to use another partition to store the data (now I am using the C: partition and I would like to use another one). And I found another issue: it got stuck at about 17%. Once it reaches at about (for example) 16.8%, it goes back to about 15.7%. And it continues to regress once it reaches about 17%. Is that normal? Thank you. |

Hi,
----------------------------------------LAIM (LIM) you find in BOINC Manager, Advanced [Grid] view, on the Advanced Menu, Local Preferences, Disk Memory usage tab. Is your client on the Processor Tab set to "While Computer is in Use"? Most people wont notice this, so suggest you tick that box too if it is not, certainly with the hardware you have. From reading I understand your machine is only on when you need it i.e. no nighttime uninterrupted computing for BOINC. let us know PS: This 17% > 16.8% > 17% > 16.8% > 17% type progress is normal for all Autodock based science projects. The application tries to find the best energy, so tries and tries until it decides it cant do better and then start on the next docking, so progress shows as fast, slow, back, slow, back, slow, fast etc. You have to let the progress get past these points. Only then is a checkpoint saved from which the science can resume the next time you start the computer.

Thank you for your explanations, Sekerob.
Yes, my BOINC client is set to "While Computer is in Use?", but no, I don't let the computer on overnight. It has passed that 17% poin, now it is at about 60%, and I am happy. Currently I put the computer to hibernate and until now it seems that BOINC is doing just fine with that (but Windows might have some issues when resuming from hibernation... it didn't happen until now, I hope it will stay like that). Thank you. |
