Now that I have finished my latest project, I was looking forward to starting work on the betas that were in my cache.
----------------------------------------I see that Norton Insight has cancelled them and has placed them in quarantine. That can happen now and then. Kaspersky had the same problem a while ago, but a new version fixed it.
----------------------------------------Is your Norton Insight current? If so, it may just not allow WCG betas. I am using AVG for myself, and have had no problems at all with BOINC false positives.

On the 3 machines I still have NIS running on (they don't expire until next summer), I excluded the BOINC program and data folders from being scanned/monitored. The tech (re)assured us they scan everything before making it available for download. Microsoft Defender and Security Essentials have not made a peep about BOINC's activities.

All updates present and running.
----------------------------------------Norton seems to rely more on Norton Insight than on actually scanning. I have no idea what the 'suspicious activity' was, and surely it could be no more suspicious than any other WCG WU! Because Insight relies on trust, how can it ever learn to trust when it terminates and quarantines new files??? Anyway, I handed over control to Norton Support and the trigger happy assistant deleted everything without my permission and then expected me to thank him for 'fixing' my problem. Needless to say, I left him without a name! Second line support apologised and told me to switch off Insight totally. Are these guys crazy or waht? And what happened to their old method of allowing people to make their own decisions? Isn't that what quarantine was meant to be for? I am so mad that the 20 beta WUs I had ready to be worked on were all trashed. And have I now lost the trust of WCG? Crunching in memory of my Mum PEGGY, cousin ROPPA and Aunt AUDREY. |

Protecting BOINC and associated folders seems to be the only solution, ZoSo.

retsof, would it be possible for me to be sent a beta WU so that I can test that I have successfully configured Inight to ignore BOINC in future?

If a WU is missing from the client_state.xml file, usually it will be resend by server as long as it is not reported/expired/not needed anymore. But I don't know if this is true for beta WUs as well.

Think this bit is critical and indicating an unrecoverable state:
----------------------------------------File: c:\programdata\BOINC\projects\www.worldcommunitygrid.org\wcg_beta10_autodock_6.07_windows_intelx86 Removed Running program: c:\programdata\BOINC\projects\www.worldcommunitygrid.org\wcg_beta10_autodock_6.07_windows_intelx86 Terminated The re-fetch of lost files I've only seen on project reset for unstarted jobs. Can't attest to them being refetched if some other local process removes them. Beta is treated as a regular project. BOINC knows no difference... but, the distributor was stopped for latter anyhow. At any rate Norton would have responded same if not in attendance. Coincidental is a post I made in the HCMD2 forum where I saw someone reporting an error result and the log listing an HCMD2 task name, but the log content that of an AutoDock job. I'm hoping the one who reported that result checks in and tells us what happened there. We know the client version was 6.6.36 from the log. On security software as with retsof's AVG, the AVAST I'm always returning to has not done this to me yet. AVAST is a little CPU consuming and causes the BOINC benchmark for the integer part to drop about 6-7%, but it's good for me, always. With all this AV software, diskscanning switch off is fine, long as the memory scanning remains active and it will. Firewall, I rely on the functions in the router and a little IP/MAC table maintenance in there. Windows Defender is left on.

AFAIK boinc checks on startup whether all known files exist and (if configured) whether they have the correct checksum. This includes al executables as well. So it should refetch them from the WCG server if it cannot find them upon startup.
(I tested it unintended some time ago (when DDDT1 started) and it worked with boinc 5.10.45. Don't know whether it was changed during the boinc/server development...) |

Okay thanks, I'll test this and just delete a task file to see what happens, whilst on line. Suspect things break if not.
----------------------------------------In the case of these suspicious tasks being removed...if Norton killed the job, it is probable it killed them successively. added: deleted a HCC job image with a number that match one in the tasks list.
