Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

Well, I just replaced my heat&power hungry X3360 to a less heat&power hungry Q9400S...same thing was done with Q9550S, but that one is about $100 a piece!

Soon el.bills in Croatia will raise, probably from 1st Jan...so I'm prepared!

One thing I noticed that with that QS procesors & full intel heatsink for intel, much less heat is going out in the room! So soon, the 3rd one has to go also! ;)

I know what you mean Klik

It's swings and roundabouts

If your PC or your energy efficient lights are not pumping out the waste heat they used to, due to progress ........ your heating has to be turned up/stay on longer to compensate

Well, gas is not so expensive for heating...& having one hot room in house, totally disrupts my thermometer!

So, it's better to have it with EE procs installed! ;)

Agreed KLiK

We've come a long way energy efficiency wise since the beginning of this project

Single core 32bit 2.1Ghz 89Watt TDP ....

An interesting take on haves vs have-nots:
families pay extra to keep the lights on

Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

We need to resist the introduction of "Smart" Meters Harriscott

They are being installed under the guise of "This will allow you to see how much energy you are using around the clock and we'll be able to provide cheaper electricity at certain times of the day"

Instead it means ....we now have complete control over your supply

The problem with the UK supply isn't renewables. It's the complete lack of foresight given to plan a reliable electricity supply in a joined up fashion. A rigged Market ....and the UK political history of the 80's (I can't even say that name)

5th largest economy by GDP and yet we will be sitting in the dark shortly.

My Pic of Ferrybridge on the 8th March this year

It was shut down on the 23rd March as legislation turned this fully paid for fully viable resource into a huge loss making enterprise for it's owner

We have a government who are anti-coal anti-fracking pro-nuclear (because it is so clean and safe - despite the £120,000,000,000 plus bill to clean up the current nuclear mess) and so .....

The lights are going out

" households could be forced to pay extra to keep their lights on while their neighbours “sit in the dark” because “not everyone will be able to use as much as electricity as they want”.

How's your Global Warming ?

Darn chilly, thank you very much. This shows how much climate science has improved over the years. Decades ago we had milder winters, and scientists said that Global Warming would cause milder winters, and the press came out with articles such as this:
Snowfalls are now just a thing of the past

But that was long ago, before the discovery of Climate Change. Now we understand that Climate Change causes all sorts of bad weather, such as freezing blizzards. Just so!

But that was long ago, before the discovery of Climate Change.

Perhaps you might benefit from a little more understanding of the very long history of the climate change debate. Discovery was certainly not a recent event - rather it was about 200 years ago.

The history of the scientific discovery of climate change began in the early 19th century when ice ages and other natural changes in paleoclimate were first suspected and the natural greenhouse effect first identified. In the late 19th century, scientists first argued that human emissions of greenhouse gases could change the climate.
