Humberto has just struggled into Hurricane territory

75mph winds - the first of the Season

2013 has also blown the theory of exposed Sea at the pole absorbing more heat causing a warmer sea which ...
Thanks for the reminder! That particular "tipping point" was all the rage last summer, as a web search for "arctic sea ice tipping point" shows.

Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

No worries

Here's how Humberto has been defined a hurricane

THE CLOUD PATTERN HAS BECOME A LITTLE BETTER ORGANIZED THIS
AFTERNOON IN BOTH MICROWAVE AND CONVENTIONAL IMAGERY. THE
EYE...ALTHOUGH RAGGED AND INTERMITTENT...IS EMBEDDED WITHIN A SMALL
CENTRAL DENSE OVERCAST WITH CONVECTIVE BANDS WRAPPING AROUND
THE CENTER PRIMARILY IN THE SOUTHERN SEMICIRCLE. SATELLITE
INTENSITY ESTIMATES ARE UNANIMOUSLY 4.5 ON THE DVORAK SCALE AND ON
THIS BASIS...THE INITIAL INTENSITY HAS BEEN ADJUSTED UPWARD TO 75
KNOTS. HUMBERTO HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO STRENGTHEN A LITTLE MORE
BEFORE IT REACHES COOLER WATERS AND INCREASING SHEAR IN ABOUT A DAY.
AFTER THAT TIME...GRADUAL WEAKENING SHOULD BEGIN.

4.5 on the Dvorak scale thinking

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvorak_technique

Humberto "measured" as a Hurricane on this day of all days ?

Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

Today there is as near as makes no difference 50% more sea ice at the north pole than last year at this time

(49.978%)

See http://www.ijis.iarc.uaf.edu/seaice/extent/plot_v2.csv

Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

What have we learned while watching the North Pole melt and then reform each year?

It's a dynamic place unlike the South Pole as the Ice forms on the Sea. Year by year there are large positive and negative shifts in coverage and these are in the most part due to the weather. If a storm brews early in the year shortly after maxima this has the effect of cracking the ice on the water which in turn, like last year, turns the North Poles Sea Ice into a giant Slush Puppie (Other frozen flavoured beverages are available) which accelerates the melt (More exposed ice surface to warming temperature - smaller pieces easier to wash away)

This year just such a storm passed over the Russian facing side of the North Pole and it is here that the meltout has been greatest.

We don't control the size of the North Pole melt year by year, the Weather does. The longer we observe it the more we appreciate it is not static environment where every year the ice reaches this spot and now look how far away it is. No it's much more variable and subject to the vagaries of the weather.

What we do know is that every year it returns to almost the same level at maxima in March and given the tilt of the Earth with respect to the Sun .... it always will do.

Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

To demonstrate just how mad extrapolation can be

If the current rate of increase of Sea Ice at minima continues the Planet would be engulfed in ice in less than 12 years

4,809,288 km2 2013
7,212,874 km2 2014
10,817,726 km2 2015
16,224,210 km2 2016
24,332,749 km2 2017
36,493,774 km2 2018
54,732,638 km2 2019
82,086,924 km2 2020
123,112,339 km2 2021
184,641,442 km2 2022
276,921,569 km2 2023
415,321,471 km2 2024
622,890,897 km2 2025

Planet Earth 510,072,000 km2

The Horror biggrin

The thing about the Sellafield plant is that it used to be called Windscale

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sellafield

You're not going to get a cluster if you liberally sprinkle the whole population

Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

With 2 days of regrowth at the North Pole I'm calling it

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/7139797.stm

FALSE : There's 743,549 km2 more Sea Ice at the Pole than in 2007 (almost a Zambia more)

There was 4,809,288 km2 at minima this year using JAXA's revised system (Over 5 million in old money) 1.52 times the size of India

http://www.ijis.iarc.uaf.edu/cgi-bin/seaice-monitor.cgi?lang=e

So that's "Arctic summers ice-free by 2013" = FALSE

Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

UK Daily Mail reporter David Rose faces threats and intimidation after writing articles challenging the global warming narrative
But the article and its author also became the object of extraordinarily vitriolic attacks from climate commentators who refuse to accept any evidence that may unsettle their view of the science.
A Guardian website article claimed our report was ‘delusional’ because it ignored what it called an ‘Arctic death spiral’ caused by global warming.
Beneath this, some readers who made comments had their posts removed by the site moderator, because they ‘didn’t abide by our community standards’.
But among those that still remain on the site is one which likens the work of David Rose – who is Jewish – to Adolf Hitler’s anti-Semitic rant Mein Kampf.
Another suggests it would be reasonable if he were to be murdered by his own children. A comment under the name DavidFTA read: ‘In a few years, self-defence is going to be made a valid defence for parricide [killing one’s own father], so Rose’s children will have this article to present in their defence at the trial.’
