Clock Speeds on I7 920 Processor

Hi Everyone

I have some interesting results to share with you.

I have two I7 920 processor computers running Rice exclusively with HT enabled. Both are running 64 bit operating systems although one is Vista and the other is Windows 7.

One PC is running at stock clock speed of 2.67 GHz and the other is running overclocked at 3.8 GHz.

Both PCs are indicating 100% cpu utilisation on all 8 cores yet both are taking exactly the same time to complete a result of 7.01 hours.

The only guess I can make is that there is memory contention within the actual cores and therefore the wait cycles are slowing things down ?

Does anyone else have any thoughts on the matter ?

Regards

Re: Clock Speeds on I7 920 Processor

Hi Everyone

Doh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have answered my own question ...

I thought work units were optimised to run for a set time for an average processor with faster processors completing the task quicker and slower processors taking longer however it appears that the size of the work unit you download is optimised for the PC that runs it so in theory all computers should complete in the same time period.

Close to right. Rice is a special project that has a fixed time of at least 7 hours. It will stop after the first "piece" it finishes after 7 hours. Your faster processor will finish more pieces in the 7 hours and should get more points on average.

Other WCG projects will take less time with a faster processor as you would expect.

Re: Clock Speeds on I7 920 Processor

These pieces are called "seeds". :D

A similar set up exists in HCMD2. They will cut off at the 'position' that is being calculated at the end of the 6th CPU hour if less than 60% of the included positions have not completed. The remaining positions are passed to the next result that someone else's client will receive. If more than 60% is done it is tried to finish all, but if not, it will cut of at the end of the 12th CPU hour.
