Problems of a High School Agent

After several attempts, I am having a problem that I myself cannot seem to fix. The school's computers use a HTTPS proxy system and also uses networking usernames and passwords for each student. To access the internet, authorization is required. Both the port and the proxy address are correct, due to the fact Firefox runs with the same settings and freely connects to the internet.
Herein lies the rub. There are some computers (my initial one used at school) that work perfectly and connect at regular times, whenever it can. Using my personal settings on the rest of the computers, they successfully download the data for points and my username for WCG.
Unfortunately, for one exception, they fail to connect and download the project.
They all run Windows 98 and use my personal connection settings. Any kind of way to fix this problem?

Re: Problems of a High School Agent

Let me get this straight. You are running the client on the labs computers at your high school? You have 1 login name and password that you are logging onto multiple computers with? Do they have a policy installed that allows each user to access the network only 1 time? Try to connect to the internet via two computers and see if you can surf on both of them at the same time. If you can't, you will have to have access to the server and setup a new policy for your username.

Hello, PriestBilly,
Unfortunately, for one exception, they fail to connect and download the project.
Does this mean that all but one of the computers connect, download and run using your password? Or is there a group of computers that do not work?

And what is the point at which things go wrong for the non-working computer(s)? Does it refuse to install after you connect to the WCG with a browser and click to download? Does it install and show a grid icon in the tskbar?

PriestBilly,

Perhaps you could use your dedication to World Community Grid to lobby your school to become a partner. You can see our current list of partners here .

Re: Problems of a High School Agent

Alright, to try and help clarify things, I'll go over exactly what happens.

When the lab's computers are first booted up, they load windows normally but prompt for a network domain password (I believe this is different from the normal "users" log-ins) It then connects to the proxy server and runs a quick program to allow access to the proxy.
Example (this is the window I see)
Username: <me>
Password : ******
Domain : Pike

Once that is done, it allows access to the internet through the proxy provided I enter my username and password when the proxy pop-up appears. I have yet to try to surf the internet when I log on to 2 differnet computers with my username, Minstrel, thanks for the idea.

I will also try to set up (inside WCG at first, then the above window) to where it would run with my friend's username on one PC, mine on another, another friends on a third ect.

Also, mycrofth, the WCG agent successfully installs and brings up the icon in the system tray. On the agent itself, under the Member Information, it will successfully update the scores UPON INSTALLATION but never again (half of them still show 1700 points, now I have over 5000). Un-installing and reinstalling the Grid Agent suceeded in updating the scores, but resulted in the -Grid agent paused, see www.wcgrid.org/cause.html- message to be displayed and nothing more happen, just like before.

I will try the above stated propositions on Monday and get back to you then. Thank you for your support, crossing my fingers ;-)

Re: Problems of a High School Agent

You have run into a school security program. From the description it is not one I have heard of, but that's no surprise. If you look at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=netconn#69 you will read:
The agent initiates only outgoing connections on port 443 to server.worldcommunitygrid.org. This could be preconfigured as a safe zone.
If the system tech at your school were to set a rule allowing this outbound contact using the Secure Socket Protocol (which is what port 443 is for) then I expect everything would work.

Re: Problems of a High School Agent

Thank you.
The solution was as Minstrel suggested, I needed to log into each computer (and the respective agents) with a different network proxy name.
It seems that WCG would only log in with each username a maximum of 3 different computers... dunno why.
But now all of the computers (that still work ;-) are successfully running WCG.
Thank you for your support!

Re: Problems of a High School Agent

Glad to hear that everything is working now, PriestBilly. But I think that you are dealing with a security policy enforced by your school's firewall. The WCG has a number of members with far more than 3 computers.

Best of luck!

Re: Problems of a High School Agent

heh, thanks mycrofth, but that's not what I mean ;-)
Not the agents under my WCG username (that would be Priestbilly) but the network loging that's used for the proxy (something like bbridgeman1).
Actually, I now have 9 more systems set up, and an additional 2 to my friend gmarcbentley1.
THIS should fold those protiens ;-)

Re: Problems of a High School Agent

I bet the machines which get the score update, yet stay paused might not meet the minimum hardware requirements for the HPF project. Please check this, particularly the amount of memory the machine has which must be at least 128MB and the processor should be at least 200Mhz:

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=minimumreq

Future projects at World Community Grid might be able to run on machines with less memory or CPU speed. You will have to wait for those to get launched to see what the requirements will be for any given project.
