confused ERROR: Unable to connect to grid server

I have already 2 PCs set up for the wcg with my member name. Now I want to add another computer. Therefore, I installed the software. When logging on with the option 'Click here if you are an existing member' I get a small window saying:
'Unable to connect to Grid Server. Please try again. If you are using a proxy server, pls. verify the settings with your network administrator'.

I am not using proxy server and I have access to the internet (as you can see by using this thread). Any idea? Is it because I am using Windows 2000? THANKS.

Re: ERROR: Unable to connect to grid server

Hello JohannesKuhn,
The server is not sending you that message. It comes from the Agent on your computer. Therefore, the first thing to suspect is that some security program on your end is causing a communication problem.

So the first thing is to describe your system. It runs Windows 2000. What firewall program does it use? What anti-virus program? How does it connect to the Internet? Through a router? Does it differ from your other 2 computers?

There are a lot of people willing to help diagnose this problem. We just need to start getting information to work with.

Re: ERROR: Unable to connect to grid server

Hi thanks a lot for your reply.
It looks like that it is the Firewall. I have CyberArmor and it states 'Deny TCP outbound with remote 129.33.89.134/443' and a local number 2427 (whatever that might be). I do not know if I can change anything here. Also, is it useful to change any proxy settings to get the machine running? Thanks for any support !

Re: ERROR: Unable to connect to grid server

'Deny TCP outbound with remote 129.33.89.134/443' means that it is refusing to allow a connection to URL 129.33.89.134 using the Secure Socket Protocol, which is what port 443 is used for. This is mentioned at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=netconn

There must be a way to get CyberArmor to open up port 443. I suggest clicking on advanced options in the program. If nothing obvious turns up, then we can search for a web forum for CyberArmor in order to ask knowledgable users how to do this.

sad Re: ERROR: Unable to connect to grid server

Hi, I have tried some things but actually, I can not find a way to open that port 443. If I try to change something I have to enter a password. Another approach is if it is possible to use another port whicht might be open. But I have no idea how to change a port.
Even though I understand very good that the Firewall is pretty good doing its job, I hope that I am not the only person in the worldcommunity who is restricted by that firewall.
Thanks for any suppport.

Re: ERROR: Unable to connect to grid server

Cheer up, JohannesKuhn,
I looked up CyberArmor after my last post. It starts here: http://www.infoexpress.com/security_products/firewall_overview.php
CyberArmor is an enterprise personal firewall solution. . . . CyberArmor gives administrators extensive control over policies. Security profiles can be tailored for individuals and groups, and policies can be customized at a granular level. Central management allows administrators to deploy policy changes quickly and easily without user cooperation.
It sounds to me as though your security policies are being set by a security administrator somewhere. If so, you need to point him to http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=netconn#69 which says:
The agent initiates only outgoing connections on port 443 to server.worldcommunitygrid.org. This could be preconfigured as a safe zone.
If he does this, then everything should work.

Re: ERROR: Unable to connect to grid server

I have not used CyberArmor myself, but after reading a little about it on the net, it seems it has a component which is centrally managed by some site administrator. Perhaps that is where the outgoing port 443 access to server.worldcommunitygrid.org needs to be set. Can you see if there is such an administrator person controlling the firewall at your site? He may be the only one who can open up this port. You might not be able to do so yourself on your own PC in your situation.

Re: ERROR: Unable to connect to grid server

There is definitely something going on with the new version.

Rosetta finishes a task, goes to upload and gets hung up. When I come back to the PC I have a window open asking me to enter my password to establish a connection. Since I don't use a P/W, I hit enter but by then my whole system is messed up.

Then I exit Rosetta and do a reboot. When I log in again, sometimes I get credit for the task, but other times the same task that I just finished starts running all over again.

None of this happened before the Agent was modified.

Also, shutting down my automatic updates is the only way I can prevent this from happening. Unfortunately, this is a pain. Could it be Symantec "NetDetect?"

Thanks is advance for any input. peace

shock Re: ERROR: Unable to connect to grid server

Hi julied,
Typing Symantec NetDetect into Google, the first 2 entries are talking about XP passwords and NetDetect problems. The second article seems best organized here: http://www.kingsley-hughes.com/pc-zone/security/liveupdateproblem.asp
NetDetect is part of the Live Update feature of Norton Antivirus, etc. If it goes wrong, it does not warn you, it just presents peculiar password problems. Here is a quote from the URL above:

"Important information for Windows XP users
If you are using Windows XP, this is a known problem if your user account has a blank password. This is a very common issue under XP. For more information on this see the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article Scheduled Tasks Cannot Run with a Blank Password (Q310715)."

Hope this helps. It sounds as though your anti-virus file is getting out of date.
