How to start WCG Agent automatically at start up

I don’t see a “technical” forum so I’ll put my question here and hope for the best.

I recently had to stop the WCG Agent from running automatically at start up while I was troubleshooting some problems. How do I get it to run automatically again every time the computer starts? I’m not seeing an option in preferences or a mention of it in the help files.

Thanks

Re: How to start WCG Agent automatically at start up

hi -dc

Press the start button Find the world community grid in all programs. follow the arrow and you will see the World Communiy Grid Agent Program. Right click and select copy

Then find the startup program group (Start Button All Programs, again) (Sorry I've been around since Windows 3.1 and before) and follow the arrow hover over any programs you have in there right click and select paste.

Next time you reboot the Agent will automatically start.

Any problems post back

Regards

Sam

Re: How to start WCG Agent automatically at start up

Samuel Clemens is exactly right. If you are interested in what is going on, you can try right-clicking on the World Community Grid program in Startup - Programs - World Community Grid and then select Properties down at the bottom. It will tell you that it is really a shortcut to UD.exe. So what you are doing is copying a shortcut to UD.exe to the Startup group. If you use Windows Explorer to go to Program Files - WorldCommunityGrid, you will see a lot of files but no shortcuts. So in this case you would right-click on UD.exe and select Create Shortcut. The shortcut would not do you any good there so you would right-click on it and select either Cut or Copy. Then you could paste it onto the Desktop (for easy manual starts) or into one of the Startup subdirectories located several levels down in Documents and Settings. Much more complicated and confusing, but I think it is always nice to explain what is going on.

Now forget about it! biggrin
Happy crunching,

Thanks. It's crusin on auto pilot again. It’s been so long since I had a program start via the startup folder that I didn’t even think about that option.

Re: How to start WCG Agent automatically at start up

i think this topic is related to this thread ,i use my machine for extended periods of time on programs that require a lot of processing power, music apps mainly, and wondered if its possible to turn of the agent whilst otherwise involved ,this would mean starting it again later, any ideas on how its done.

Re: How to start WCG Agent automatically at start up

To stop the grid agent for a short time, right-click the icon and click on snooze. To always keep it out of your way, double-click the icon to bring it up onto the desktop, then choose Preferences and check 'Run as Screensaver only'. In this case, you have to select the WCG screensaver in Start - Control Panel - Display. Other screensavers will not work.

But it sounds as though you want to right-click the icon and choose 'Exit'. This will stop the program. To start it again, either reboot or manually start it by copying the shortcut to UD.exe (as explained in earlier posts) and pasting the shortcut on your desktop. Then you can double-click the shortcut to restart the program.

Are you sure that there is any reason to do this? The low priority it runs at ensures that it is swapped out to virtual memory if a memory-intensive program is run.

Re: How to start WCG Agent automatically at start up

I find the snooze button to be very effective. As mycrofth says, it shouldn't make a difference, but we are humans and not computers, and we can perceive differences just because we want to, even if there really aren't any.

When my computer seems slow, I've been know to snooze the agent just to see if it'll help. I have the snooze set to only 5 minutes, though, so I don't spend too much of my time not crunching.

Don't forget to click apply after you change the amount of snooze time.

Re: How to start WCG Agent automatically at start up

another method to get the WCG agent to start when windows does is this. click on the start menu and select run. type in msconfig. A dialogue box should appear, one of the tabs at the top of this box should say "startup." Select this tab, in the box now is a list of all the programs that have ever been available to load when windows does. Find the entry listerd as "World Community Grid Agent" and select the check box next to it.
This utility is also very useful for making windows boot faster. As a rule of thumb on everything except Toshiba laptops, I find the files that are needed for WCG, my antivirus/anti-spyware programs (this can be done by looking under the "Command" column of the same screen and seeing where the programs are located on the computer ex. c:\program files\common files\symantec shared\ccApp.exe is an file used for Norton Security products....notice the parent folder name "symantec") After you have found what you beleive to be all the appropriate files uncheck everything else... this will help windows start faster and will also allow WCG almost unlimited access to the CPU while your computer is idling. As I said before, toshiba laptops are a different case, toshiba overlaps most of windows power management programs with ones of their own creation, if you turn these off..... well lets just say don't try it. In this case, you can follow the instructions above except that any file located in a "toshiba" directory, you will want to keep checked. thats it , click apply on the bottom of the dialogue box and restart the computer when asked. If you get any errors when returning to windows that were'nt there before you've removed something you shouldn't have, go back into Msconfig and find the culprit( it will normally list the guilty program in the error message)

hope this helps .
