Hey Chris, I hear there was a moderate quake out in the Death Valley area. Isn't that fairly close to you? From my brief visit there, I seem to rember that Death Valley was caused by the two sides spreading apart from each other and they are still doing so. It never occured to me to wonder, as I do now, why that does not cause volcanic activity there. But it would obviously make it "quakey". ![]() Hey Keith, Hey RT. The quake was in Keeler, just west of Death Valley. It's about 3 hours north of me. It was only a 3.5 so if I did feel it, I probably would have thought it was my cats playing in the bath tub... RT, they are still spreading apart. Although there is no volcanic activity now, there is evidence of it all over the place as you drive toward Death Valley as there are huge lava fields all around the west side of it. I've been to Death Valley many times and there is a place called Bad Water. It's 282 feet below sea level, which is the lowest spot in the continental United States, and you can turn to the west at look at the highest spot in the continental United States - Mt. Whitney at 14,505 ft. they are just 76 miles apart! I'd say it that seismic activities were (are) hard at work in that area! Kinda cool... I have a photo of yours truly with a water bottle at "bad water". I drank part of the water in the mountains west of there and left it sealed up as we descended to bad water. As you might imagine the bottle is all distorted being "crushed" by the barometric pressure at that altitude. Actually kinda neat. ![]() Show us the photo http://www.windmillweb.com/DeathValley11.gif http://www.windmillweb.com/DeathValley13.gif What can I say...I am a fashion mavin. ![]() |

There's also some impressive views of Badwater from up top of the hills around the area too. We went by Owens Lakes on the way to Sequoias. You must be east of Edwards then. Odd though, what I read in the news said it was a 5.x quake. Edit: Found it: "The magnitude-5.0 temblor struck at 3:01 a.m. with an epicenter about 18 miles southeast of the Owens Valley town of Lone Pine. More than four dozen smaller aftershocks including at least five that registered at magnitude-3.5 followed over the next five hours." I meant to correct that as well - Thanks Keith. You are correct, it was a 5.0 at 3:00 am. Although larger, I would have probably thought it was my cats playing on my bed and would have attempted to kick them off. The sonic-booms from the airplanes at Edwards are much more significant! The quakes are getting closer, though. Haven't had a good shaker here in several years!
