Notebook/Laptop profile to get the laptops to use only 60% of the CPU, since this is the main concern of the Default profile setting.
Then, maybe, the Default setting could be set to 99%, works great while I'm not doing intensive CPU use; not 100% because lags PCs, I've seen it in many of them. I've read some Quad-Core crunchers even get it to 100% and make CPU intense use and experience no perceivable lag. I hope it helps, if not, I tried. Cheers. |

Which field are you talking about Saul?
----------------------------------------1. Use no more than: 99 % of processor time (at top of the Device Profile) or 2. On multiprocessors, use: 99 % of processors (in the advanced options section) For option 2, on a 2 duo 99% is rounded down to 50%, effectively permitting only 1 core. On a Quad that's rounded down to 75%, 3 cores of 4. For 1, the 99% of CPU Time is next to useless. The client will run 99 seconds and pause 1 second. The 60% is for temperature control i.e. the client runs 3 seconds and pauses 2 second for cool down. You're much better off if you have temperature concerns to use TThrottle, specially written for BOINC. Set a target temp and the client will be controlled dynamically.

Is there a similar program for Mac users? |

The option 1 of course to use 99% of all available processors and believe me is far from next to useless; I have a P4 HT ( not even a true dual-core), 2GB DDR-400 this being half the power an average new PC has today, is a configuration that has proved to be very effective in my system, and no, the projects tend to drop from 100% (per-"core") in less than 99 seconds, I have observe it in the Task Manager Process Tab, and this is why it works so well, at least for me, I don't see why wouldn't it on more powerful systems.
----------------------------------------I can do EVERYTHING, even load several web pages with Flash content and my PC won't lag, not one bit, I write out of experience. Imagine how much Teraflops the WCG would get by doing this small change? and Laptops would never be compromised, everyone happy :) [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Sep 15, 2009 9:53:43 AM] |

Your client start up message log will tell you how many effective processors are used by BOINC. If 99% of time (option 1) on a P4HT gives you a performance improvement using the BOINC inbuilt throttle I'll take your word for it.
----------------------------------------@mhea, no I don't know of an OS/X equivalent throttle tool, general or BOINC specific. All the known and tested BOINC add-ons [without endorsement] are listed on the next linked web page: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/addons.php

So, is the new profile will be considered for addition?

No. It appears you are the only one to see a benefit from running at 99% - and since there is no design benefit, and the benefit is only perceived and unlikely to be significant, it just isn't going to happen.
I'm glad you've found settings that work well for you. Other people have different needs, and it is very hard to generalise these things. I hope you understand. |

Saul,
----------------------------------------You can 'inofficially' and 'unsupported' create as many device profiles as you like. Find posts by e.g. Moonian on this topic. Whilst it works for you of which I'm pleased, it is not probable it works for someone else. At least, you've not convinced me at all that 99% of CPU time, not 99% of Processor cores/threads has a wide application. Post us the message start up log so we can see the processor threads actually used by your P4 HT. 60% of processor time in the default profile was btw chosen as same default used for the old UD agent, to include the safeguard of the device's temperature, regardless of how well dusted the cooling elements are maintained, wherever a volunteer is on the planet. The erring on the safe side so that no one can claim grid crunching broke someone's computer. PS, my laptop duo shows 63% efficiency with throttle control.

Well, too bad and I'm not insisting in this anymore, I think I have given more than enough proof that this settings work. You may have tried yourselves instead of saying simply no, and prove me wrong, but you just don't even wanna know nothing about it, at least your attitude says so, so be it.
Cheers. |

Saul, as said glad it works for you. As for "attitude" and "you may have tried yourselves instead", I'll let that slide. I've asked for your start-up message log. Please add to that a screenshot of the Task Manager, Performance window that charts the CPU time for several minutes of BOINC running, during use of computer and during idle. That will show all interested the impact.
