system restore caused duplicate device

I had to restore my system from an old backup, which I'm sure was running an old protein at the time. After the restore any points I accumulate are going to a new device, though with the same name. Is there a way to combine them together?

It also is misleading to the overall statistics of the WCG project in that it is reporting more devices than are actually in use.

Regards,
John

Re: system restore caused duplicate device

John --

The technical staff has indicated that the software will be modified to allow you to merge the statistics from the two at some point in the future. This request was accepted quite some time ago, so we may see this change in the not to distant future. As far as the overall statistics showing more devices than are actually in use, the merging of the statistics should help to correct this. The WCG has taken the position that any device that has returned results during this project will be counted. They have noted that even devices that have not returned results for quite some time have suddenly started to return results after a long period of no activity. They do realize that this may have resulted in inflated device counts, but at present this seems to be the only way to count them.

Here is an official post: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2587#16340
The number of 'active devices' is an active topic of discussion off the public board. There are more useful things being worked on but I expect this will eventually make the list.

Re: system restore caused duplicate device

jrcraven,

Are the points stilll accumulating to your member name?

Also, are you comparing points per device across multiple members? Or perhaps teams? I'm always interested in knowing what kind of statistics people are tracking wrt WCG...

Re: system restore caused duplicate device

On topic, a number of reinstalls has left me with 4 devices listed on my personal "Grid" page. However, only 3 show up on the "Device" page.

Rosetta shows my point total for just the last 2 days. But the "Grid" total points is somewhat correct.

My allocated memory in the Rosetta scoring panel shows 1GB even though I have set all the device defaults to 10GB twice. This is before 2 unloads/downloads.

You know, I really love this software. crying

Re: default storage allocation

Yes, our software is indeed lovely! Thank you for admiring it, julied. [modest simper]
I suspect you have run into a common problem. You can quickly check it by bringing up your Grid Agent and switching to the Preferences view. The Device Profile should list your Profile Name and Max Storage. I'll bet your Profile Name is Default. This is because every new device is assigned Default at start. You have to go into your Device Manager and click on the Device Name. Then click on the drop down menu that shows the current profile (Default, I'm betting) and your other named profiles that you have created will show as options. Select the 10 GB profile, whatever you named it (bigmomma or whatever) and click away. Then exit by clicking on Apply (might be named something else). After you return your current work unit, the Grid Agent should show the new Profile Name with 10 GB Max Storage.

Simply lovely,

Re: default storage allocation

Thanks, you are correct. I already tried to correct this by going to "Device Manager."

Although Rosetta says the name is Default, all 3 of my devices on the Device Manager page are named "puppies." The problem is that the Grid page says that I have 4 active devices.

Apparently it is the mysterious unlisted Device #4 that is accumulating the points. Furthermore, while I have been steadily crunching the "last update was returned 59+ hrs ago" according to my Stats. I sure am not getting credited for the tasks that I have been completing over the last few days.

I certainly hope it is getting registered and used, credited to me or not. sad

Re: default storage allocation

Go to device manager and change the drop down menu
'Installed/Registered Device:' to anytime. How many installed devices does it show? I have heard of people giving computers the same name, but just out of caution I would think that puppy1, puppy2, etc. would be less confusing. Or rename to old1, old2, old3, puppy. I have no idea when the 'Merge Devices' function will be implemented. Anyway, I think we should work on this a while before I call on the staff for help. They are busy with software development this week. [I have never had a beeper or cell phone, even though I am no longer active as a programmer. One thing at a time!]

Thanks. I checked and found that I actually have 5 devices that have been registered and installed. Here is what the system reports.

Statistics Last Updated: 05/10/2005 06:06:02 (UTC) [5 hour(s) ago]

Last Result Returned (UTC) 05/07/2005 23:31:58 [59+ hour(s) ago]
Device Installations 4

Thanks.

Re: default storage allocation

Lets try to define the problem.

Looking at Device Statistics, which particular device was the last to return a result? And was that result the one returned Saturday night or was it earlier? What I am trying to find out is whether this is a pre-existing condition or is it a result of the Software Update process Saturday? If your computer is no longer registered under your member name as a result of the Saturday update, then we had better report it and reinstall WCG as soon as you finish a work unit (minimizing wasted CPU time). Of course, if something happened during the update, it might be the result of some strange state your computer was in, so the thing to do is NOT to depend on some clever fix by the staff, but just report, reboot after finishing current WU, uninstall WCG, reinstall and register under your existing memberid.

I may be going too fast. Lets try for more information first.
