Re: Change Hard Drive

Hi gordoma
Thanks for your message
Yes, I have access to the drive, but I'll change my hard drive for a larger capacity.

Re: Change Hard Drive

Ok,

  • Go off-line
  • Stop BOINC
  • Make backup of Data Dir (path is in BOINC start-up message log)
  • Do the disk swapping all that stuff and if need be going on line, but making sure to go off-line again. Do not install BOINC yet!
  • Make sure computer has retained same Host name and ideally same IP address.
  • Again make sure that you are not connected to the internet.
  • Restore the BOINC Data dir
  • Install BOINC, not before, and point installer to the Data Dir where you restored the data to.
  • Make sure BOINC runs to satisfaction
  • Only Then, go back on-line and not before for a single in-between client-server contact can ruin this.

OK - The best way then is to stop BOINC from receiving any more work.

To do this, open BOINC and click on the "Projects" tab. Select "World Community Grid" on the right and then click the "No new tasks" button on the left - if you're running any other grid projects in BOINC, do the same for them too.

If you are not in a rush then you can just let all the current work and anything pending in your queue finish off.

If you are in a rush to do this then the best bet is to abort the work units in your queue. If you do this then WCG will know that you are not going to finish them and will reassign them to someone else. If you abort running WUs then you will lose any time that you had gained on them, so if you can only abort the "Ready to start" ones and let the running ones finish if you have time.

If you change your drive or reformat without aborting then those WUs won't get reissued until their deadline expire, so it's more elegant this way.

Once you've changed/reformatted then just reinstall BOINC from the WCG site, enter your user credentials and you will download more work based on your preferences.

    I hope that helps?

If you want to keep your device name then use Sek's method. If you're not fussed then either way is good.

No new tasks button is my favorite. It is also useful when shutting down your computer for a week or two vacation. It took me quite a while to realize it excisted!

I agree anytime I am going to re-format or install a new HD I go ahead and let all my WU's complete and set all projects to the No New Task.

However, if you are in a hurry to do this there is another way.
Transfer the work to another PC until you get everything back the way you want it on the reformated/new HD!
