Re: Rice betas

That is correct. We have decided to post pone the beta until next week. With all of the excitement this week we did not want to release it before a holiday weekend.

Thank you for keeping me on my toes :)

Re: Rice betas

Judson,

If you have beta selected you receive work from the beta's regardless of project selection. this is because some beta's do not associate with a project (meaning a new project). Also, the beta test for RICE has been completed, we did not have any issues and have released the work units to production already. There is no plan for additional RICE beta's in the future.

Chris,

New beta for HFCC as promised... http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,26726

Re: Rice betas

Have recieved no Beta's despite running only one project which is not rice but signed up for Beta's. Do I need to check if no work avaliable send other projects? Appreciate you response above but several Bet's WU's have come out and recieved none. Also if have several days in cache could that effect my "selection" for Beta's. Just curious as always recieved before but recently no.

Re: Rice betas

Hello judson Somerville MD,
Although there are plenty of posts by people with several Beta units, the fact is most people go for months at a time without any Betas. Beta work units are scarce. The scheduler process on the server uses 3 main inputs - the projects you have selected, whether or not you have selected Beta work units, and whether or not you have elected to run any available project if nothing meets your selections. THese are 3 different inpots that do not affect each other.

Re: Rice betas

I have had beta selected pretty much since badges came out.. only running 3-5 computers (currently 3) in that time i have gotten 107 beta's totaling 8 days 8 hours.

most the time beta units are a very small batch and with the super users (25+ machines) they normally tend to grab many of them at a time... myself i managed to get 1 in this latest batch of HFCC and 3 in the latest RICE.

when they release beta work there are batches of (and i am sure someone will correct me this is a guess) about 1000 jobs. and there are i am sure more than 20,000 computers with beta selected so your odds are not very good on getting them

Another point is when people find a beta is running they normally grab all they can (i found out about 2 hours into work so i couldn't get home to set my computers to grab more)

remember the deadline on beta WU's is also 4 days normaly so if your machine online/connect every x days and such prove you are likely not to get the job done in time you wont get one.

on and judson Somerville MD. the past 2 sets of beta's are in projects i have not been selected. BETA completely bypass the normal work unit selection and being my computers normally only grab 1 work unit when they connect i am not surprised that i only got 1 beta this last time.

also if you notice Uplinger's badges (sorry to pick on ya but its too easy) he is the person who normally posts that the beta work is out there (on the official read only forum) and he has less than 1 year (more then 6 months) worth of beta work units completed and every other job that is active is Sapphire (2 years +) so he obviously has a large bank of computers to do the work and he knows when the beta's are coming out too.

so basically if you get 1 a beta cycle be happy and if you miss a few beta cycles maybe there can be something in your preferences you can tweak to make your computer(s) be connected more often and with less stored work to give you a better chance.

the only other way is if the people with large amounts of computers decide to not run beta's so the rest of us can get our bronzes.

All i can say is good luck catching the beta's but please leave at least 1 for me each run

Re: Rice betas

Nasher and Lawerencehardin thanks for the information. It seemed at least a couple cycles recieved lots of Beta's then after focused soley on CEP, then Rice and now influenza have not recieved any for weeks. Realize they are not always avaliable but just did not want to inadvertently exclude myself from them. Am like 12 hours from bronze and tired of seeing that short gap. Will just try to be more patient! Again thanks for your time. tongue tongue tongue

Re: Rice betas

I picked up Rice Beta WU's with little difficulty, but I consider myself very lucky to have gotten any of the HFCC ones. My instinct is that the HFCC beta was an awful lot smaller than the Rice one and almost all the units were hoovered up very quickly by the megacrunchers with 100's of machines.

I got in from work only about 3 hours after the HFCC beta was launched and by then I felt I was scraping the bottom of the Beta barrel.
