After reading this thread, I said that maybe I should check what happens with my WU's. I never really looked in detail.
----------------------------------------Here we are I have recent data for three devices which have different performances and to make it easy I will classify them in relative terms as Slow, Standard, Fast. They do in fact have each one a different CPU that can be qualified as such in relative terms. I give average values for Granted - Requested. Avg G-M = Device 1 - SLOW Avg G-M = +15. It varies from 10 to 20. Device 2 - STANDARD Avg G-M = -10. Device 3 - FAST Avg G-M = -8. I do not have any more the Device 1 it retired and I have only Device type 2 and type 3. The gap value is an average but the pattern is clear. The WU's which have small CPU time, will request less points and the negative gap between requested and granted is smaller. For more time consuming WU's the requested points are higher and the negative gap is also larger. This means that faster machines may turn out more units per day but for every unit they loose points. So the more units the more points. I agree that the concept of loosing is also relative because you could tell me that the granted value is too optimistic. On the other hand we donate the time anyway for an excellent cause and all this may seem ridiculous. But back on earth, nevertheless I get a positive gap with a slower machine and negative gap with a faster machine. Should have kept the slower machine, but kids need answers fast so the hell with points I will move up with faster machines anyway. ![]() ![]() |

There may be various reasons for differences between claimed and granted credits, and what you have observed (slow machines granted more and fast machines granted less) is not general: there are cases where it is the opposite.
----------------------------------------In your case the reason is simple: your fast machines are i7's which are running in HT mode most probably, and as you have certainly read these last days hyperthreaded machines are claiming more than they should with regards to the actual performance of their so-called virtual cores. For the same reason my old P4HT is also granted less than it claims, but since it claims rather high it is finally paid rather fairly. Reasons for other configuations are not always so clearly explainable though, and in a way you are lucky to be able to know precisely why your fast machines are granted less than claimed. Cheers. Jean. |
