I don't quite follow the argument, either. The homogeneous redundancy classes pretty much take care of themselves (after all the work the techs put into designing the system). The cost is in creating builds for additional platforms, and the associated testing.
Further, to take proper advantage of 64bit requires more than mere recompilation. Just recompiling may in some cases provide a small increase, but it completely misses the potential benefits. But major code changes would require additional validation testing to ensure that the results are correct (from the researchers' point of view, not merely identical - results can easily be identical but wrong!). |

Well it was just a suggestion, if it doesn't work well it just doesn't work.
Cheers. |

I am operating BOINC 6.6.20 since may 2009 on my quad under vista home premium 64 - without any issues at all.
Yesterday I upgraded another 64-bit machine from 6.2 to 6.6.36. Of course I saved the data directory first, installed the new version and replaced the data directory with the saved data. See tommunichs post to know what happens if you try the simple way of just installing the new version on top of the old one - all WU's will be lost. However, something went wrong when I reinstalled the BOINC data. The results are errors on two IADS WU's - And now I got tons of inconclusives because I have to show again that this client is reliable .Up to now no further bug was observed. |

One other point about 64 bit, as they become not just commonplace but standard (say 2 or 3 years? maybe less?) then they will move it up and you will need a 64 bit to do WCG. Ok before they do that I'm sure they will wait til like 90% or so are crunching with 64 bit. People (rightly so) like to keep their dinosaurs crunching (I have a single core old laptop going if they ran anymore I would have 2 old single core desktops as well). Somewhere there is a sweet spot for conversion, where the loss of the old machines will be more than compensated by the increased speed of the 64 bit. Brighter minds than my own can chime in
----------------------------------------![]() Hmmm, my older quad is on vista home the 32 bit version...If I upgrade to win7 I can use more memory (I have 4 gigs installed but only like 3.2 are used) and bump up to 64 bit. From what I am reading about win7 it seems like not worth upgrading from vista 64 bit, but from 32 bit should be worth the upgrade from a crunching standpoint. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Jack007 at Sep 18, 2009 8:03:30 PM] |

Tom,
----------------------------------------No, you don't have to refresh manually. Seems to be the second oldest misconception on the functionality of BOINC. Please refer to this FAQ: Understanding Ready To Report Operations, item 4I currently on the Start Here Forum Index found at top of every forum.

Completed WUs get reported the next time BOINC goes to the server to ask for more WUs. It only looks odd especially if you have a large cache and the estimates are changing fairly quickly or if you have changed your cache from large to small ... in the extreme it will try to report at least once a day.

...if you have changed your cache from large to small ... Ah, that must be the point, thanks a lot! |
