love struck What's next for WCG?

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for my question, but here goes...

I would like to know what other projects are in the pipeline for introduction to the WCG volunteers. I note that in the next 8 months or so, it looks like three projects will be ending. hugs

Hello Gerry Rough,
Policy is not to talk about the pipeline, because it changes so.

Re: What's next for WCG?

Although, on the other hand, by reading the forums and watching what's happening, you can get a good sense of some of the things in the pipeline - i.e., CEP Phase 2, DDD-T Phase 2 and AC@h Phase 2. As to when these new phases will start, I simply don't know... cool

Okay, there could well be a few surprise projects as well (I certainly hope there is, just to keep us all on our toes - such as IADS).

Basically, all that's certain though, is to "watch this space and keep tuned in" biggrin

There has also been some discussions about GPU crunching coming at some point. I think this has been 'in development' for a while though and it's deployment date is unknown. When it is available they will certainly tell us though!

Re: What's next for WCG?

GPU crunching is more 'if' than 'when' right now. Some time ago a project said they wanted to look into it. I have not heard more, however, which I personally take as a bad sign that the programmers ran into more problems than they expected.

I would think they also ran in to the problem of CUDA or OpenCL too. CUDA is only for Nvidia cards while OpenCL is the new standard that incorporates both Nvidia and ATI and any other graphics card maker. So if you make a project crunch with CUDA specs you leave out all the ATI and other card makers, therby diminishing possible returns on your investment. But if you go with the OpenCL standard, it is sooo new that no one knows how to do it yet! A few Boinc projects are CUDA only while a few non Boinc projects do both CUDA and ATI cards, but each has its own software. GPU crunching in general is still in its infancy and it may well take a while to sort things out before lots of projects can use our gpu's.
