Stable 64-bit Boinc

My New i7 will be here in a couple of days. I was wondering which 64-bit ver. of Boinc is stable(and recommend by WCG)?

Also where do I download this copy so I can start cooking w/gas ASAP.

Thanks for the time.

Unfortunately there is no 64 bit WCG approved version, you will need to go directly to BOINC to get a 64 bit version.

I am currently running 6.6.36 and am not having any problems. I am only crunching WCG so can not say if there are scheduling problems/ issues if you are crunching multiple projects.

Re: Stable 64-bit Boinc

I have used several versions of 64 bit BOINC in WCG and never had problems with any of them. But if you are planning on participating in other BOINC projects as well, you should see what are their recommendations.

Currently having 6.5.0 64-bit (gpugrid recommended version) and running WCG and GPUGrid without problems.

cheers
Mika

Re: Stable 64-bit Boinc

What about the projects? The projects that run on the 64-bit client are also 64-bit or the current 32-bit ones?

Would be great that the WCG could take full advantage of 64-bit computing.

Re: Stable 64-bit Boinc

The advantage is limited since floating point is bound to 32 bit. Already for the integer portion of the science applications substantial gain is reported by volunteers using 64bit OS/Client. Particular benefactors are HCC, HCMD and HFCC, for FAAH it was observed. All seem to gain though from running on a 64bit OS. That will be the OS bit size for the Windows7 I've ordered as upgrade.

Re: Stable 64-bit Boinc

Could you suggest to switch to 64-bit FP to the software developers of the projects? maybe isn't that hard to make a 64-bit version of the projects for the 64-bit clients...

Cheers.

Do not install it, when you have WUs running, or they will be lost!
Just made this mistake sad

Compiling a 64-bit version is easy. What is difficult is maintaining the 64-bit work queues. Remember, every man-hour spent on a queue has to be paid for. If you consider the budget cost for a moderate speedup, this looks like a bad mistake.

I admit, I would like to run one project with a 64-bit version, just to experiment.

Re: Stable 64-bit Boinc

Why we need a 64-bit work queue? aren't the WUs bit-independent?, aren't they just raw protein data that needs to be processed? if not, it should, that way it only depends on the Hardware-Software combo for performance, would be easier to develop future versions of the WCG Client.

Re: Stable 64-bit Boinc

Saul,

many discussions have gone before why it is important that results are comparable and repeatable producing the exact same result over and over again. Thus to ensure that results are identical, already homogeneity groups are maintained so that in a quorum machine A produces 100% identical result to machine B. That includes compilation for platform groups and exclusion of certain CPU optimization features that are not uniformly available on all volunteer machines.

As for the many homogeneity groups already existing for e.g projects as HCMD2, the more specialized groups, the more complex the result management becomes, to the point where there are so few that it takes way too long to get a quorum together, which then slows down the whole project. Would your idea have worked, I'd think the techs would have long done it.
