Hey All,
----------------------------------------A friend of mine wants to install and link BOINC and WCG. I'd like to be able to have him install BOINC, then I'd like to just give him my weak BOINC key. Is this possible? I've read that it is, but I don't understand exactly how to do this. Thank You, Nickoli ![]() ![]() |

You can use the normal BOINC account key if you wish. At World Community Grid, it can't be used as a password to your account. That would be terribly insecure!

It would indeed! How would I link a device using the normal boinc account key?

Copy the file account_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml
There are other ways, but this is easiest. |

Hello Nickoli,
I am puzzled. The email address is the basic idebtifier. If he uses his email address, your BOINC account key will not matter. Could you explain in detail what you are trying to accomplish? Lawrence |

Basically, I want to be able to bring machines online without giving away my password (i.e- when you link WCG in BOINC, it asks for email and password)

Yes, of course I do. I too ask them to make their own account, but sometimes I have friends who'd rather help me and just link to mine.

If you go to https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewMyProfile.do you will see a field called verification code. This is your weak account key.
Follow the directions here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Weak_account_keys to create a project file based on the weak account key. Place that file in the BOINC data directory and you should be good. Also - to those above. The authenticator should be consider a secure item like the password. We are gradually improving our integration with account managers. The RPC's that support account management use the authenticator as the identifier for the users account. As a result, if you provide your authenticator to someone, they could use to gain access to your account. |

So the AMS system isn't secure?
Well we knew that already. It's why WCG doesn't support it fully. I expect you will make the necessary changes to avoid compromising security. |
