Since I installed the latest BOINC Manager (ver 6.6.36) whenever I update the WCG program, in the Messages page, a line apppears saying: "Requesting new tasks for GPU", in the far right column of the messages, right to the Word Community name and the date.
Now, I AM using GPU in this PC, but for SETI (I didn't know if WCG supported it and since when). Is it possible to use GPU with WCG and how? Or am I doing something terribly wrong somewhere? Thanks in advance ![]() |

WCG does not have any projects that will use your GPU. I am guessing that it is requesting GPU WUs from SETI.

I copy & paste here: 10/8/2009 4:00:07 am World Community Grid Sending scheduler request: To fetch work. 10/8/2009 4:00:07 am World Community Grid Requesting new tasks for GPU 10/8/2009 4:00:12 am World Community Grid Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks |

Hi Stvamaster,
Your BOINC Manager is telling the WCG server that it has an unused GPU and requests GPU work units. However, the WCG server does not have any GPU work units to send so it ignores this request and sends CPU work units to keep the CPU busy. Lawrence |

Not going to opine, just saying that the clients that have GPU functionality are not able to distinct projects that have and don't have GPU work. Those that don't want their client to keep asking for this work can add the overall functioning <options> line <no_gpus>1</no_gpus> to the cc_confgi.xml.
----------------------------------------As for the future, WCG tech said that the default here will be off in the device profiles once a GPU utilizing project will be launched, as and when. Possibly their next custom client kit when released will set the cc_config.xml option to off as well. Again, not going to opine one this, fact is that it does create allot of useless server hitting traffic all around the DC world. Lawrence, as I understand, the client 6.6.36 has a separate scheduler for CPU and GPU work, i.e. there is no substitutionary provision.

Those that don't want their client to keep asking for this work can add the overall functioning <options> line <no_gpus>1</no_gpus> to the cc_confgi.xml. This will turn-off all GPU-work, not just the current project, so isn't an option for users that wants GPU-work in other projects. As for the future, WCG tech said that the default here will be off in the device profiles once a GPU utilizing project will be launched, as and when. Possibly their next custom client kit when released will set the cc_config.xml option to off as well. Again, not going to opine one this, fact is that it does create allot of useless server hitting traffic all around the DC world. This probably depends on if WCG expects to have a GPU sub-project available within a few months of an upgraded client-release or not. If there's a GPU sub-project available "soon", using cc_config.xml is not a good option, since users must manually edit this file to enable GPU-crunching. Lawrence, as I understand, the client 6.6.36 has a separate scheduler for CPU and GPU work, i.e. there is no substitutionary provision. Just like BOINC won't give you work for a PPC/Mac if you're asking for work for a Intel/windows-computer, BOINC won't give you cpu-work if you're asking for GPU-work. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. Let me translate one thing for you "overall functioning <options>" as in "non-project specific discriminating" ;>)

after runnin some projects that use the GPU i have shut all GPU programs down... running GPU programs on my 3 computers adds about 15F to the temprature of the room (i am afrade to figure out how much the computers heat up themselves)
