Re: Windows XP vs 7? (Boinc Speeds).

also whilst 64-bit OS's are faster than 32-bit and thus good for WCG - not getting 64-bit drivers for hardware (eg. tv cards - sound cards) outweighs this speed advantage from a users perspective.

Not getting drivers? All WHQL-certified drivers for Vista must be able to run on Vista 64 bit. I'm sure the same goes for Windows 7.

Re: Windows XP vs 7? (Boinc Speeds).

I don't mean to hijack the tread but I do have a question regarding Windows 7 and 64 bit BOINC.

When I re-load my computer to Windows 7 I plan on loading the 64 bit version. If I load the 64 bit version of BOINC from the BOINC website, will I be able to control that device through the WCG website and get credit through my existing account?

Yes, as far as controlling and crediting and so on it doesn't matter if you're running 32-bit or 64-bit BOINC-client.

Since you're installing a new OS, the easiest is to set "no new work" in BOINC and finish all work and report it before switching OS, and after installing OS just install new BOINC-client. You'll need to manually attach to WCG, but this shouldn't be a big problem.

Re: Windows XP vs 7? (Boinc Speeds).

Thankyou for all the reply's smile

I think I've got no worries about going with Win7 (64bit), when I get the system (have so far managed to avoid Vista, just too many horror stories out there, Win7 seems to have a good vibe about it?).

Dave.

Windows7 is faster for me than XP Pro was on the same machine. I have a couple of AMD quads that are identical, both are now running Win7 because it is just plain faster crunching Boinc. They are both the 32 bit version of Windows, I have not tried the 64 bit version yet. Yes Windows7 is MUCH better than Vista, it is what Vista should have been! All that being said I have also found that Ubuntu Linux is just as fast and since it is FREE is a viable alternative. It really isn't that hard to learn how to use, most things are findable, not intuitive but findable. Once found the setup is enough like Windows that you can figure it out. I am far from a Linux expert but can setup a new pc, and be crunching Boinc, in under an hour under Linux. That is with a brand new hard drive, new cpu the whole 9 yards. There are a couple of quirky things but nothing special and there are LOTS of people out there that will help. The longest part of the whole thing is the download of the OS!!! That is not part of the hour I was talking about. Just an idea for a dedicated cruncher, of which I have several!
