I'm waiting for the Hex Cores to come out before buying an I7 920 (hoping the I7's will drop in price), but I am wondering about which windows to have running??
----------------------------------------I don't need anything fancy that Win 7 offers as the I7 will be a dedicated crunching machine and won't be used for anything else, my current Quaddie will be my day to day machine (and occasional additional cruncher). But incase XP isn't available when I finally jump in and buy the I7, I wanted to know if Boinc runs just as fast under Win7 as with XP or if it runs slower (or if there is no noticable difference), as I may buy XP now and just wait for the system (if Boinc is slower under Win7). Cheers in advance, Dave. ![]() ![]() |

Dave,
The operating system should not affect the speed of BOINC. It is mostly the hardware processors. If you install a new version of Window on a computer that has an older version of Windows, BOINC will just run at the same speed in the new operating system as it does in the older operating system. Thats cool, cheers
---------------------------------------- I assumed that as Win7 needed more system resources, that might have an effect on the speed that the system would crunch at. ![]() ![]() |

I will have to have Windows 7 before I can pontificate, but I have recently read an article in which the surprised reviewer said that Windows 7 was using far fewer resources than Vista. In fact, he said that it was almost as efficient as Windows XP.

Get a 64 bit OS if your hardware supports that. Several WCG projects benefit in actual crunching throughput. For one the handling of integers seems to be materially faster under 64 bit OS, though all WCG sciences are compiled for use in 32 bit. Do get a 64bit client version, one that is not offered a download to on this website.
----------------------------------------Can't remember which 64 bit version JmBoullier uses. He's been experimenting and comparing 32 bit and 64 bit on Windows and with Linux. The last compiled of the 6.2 family seems to be 6.2.19. Download link from Berkeley source: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_6.2.19_windows_x86_64.exe

Windows 7 runs much better and faster on my computers. For example, my Pentium 4 3.0gig performs just as fast
as when I was running XP, but running Vista was truly a painful process. |

Download link from Berkeley source: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_6.2.19_windows_x86_64.exe I am using the standard version available through Synaptic with Ubuntu 9.04 in my Q6600. It runs without trouble and performance is very good. The price is very interesting too. I have no 64-bit experience under Windows since my Windows OS in the same Q6600 is an old recycled XP 32 SP3. For most projects I have seriously compared under both OS (HCC, HCMD2, DDDT, and IADS ) the improvement in 64-bit mode is between 20 and 30 %. I have some numbers in the same range for FAAH but I consider them as less reliable: less data and a big diversity of FAAH WUs duration. I can obviously not promise it without any preliminary testing but my feeling is that the benefit of 64 over 32 should be about the same with other OS. Cheers. Jean. |

Thankyou for all the reply's
----------------------------------------![]() I think I've got no worries about going with Win7 (64bit), when I get the system (have so far managed to avoid Vista, just too many horror stories out there, Win7 seems to have a good vibe about it?). Dave. ![]() ![]() |

sir,
i beg to differ on your assertion that "The operating system should not affect the speed of BOINC." a simple 'Run CPU Benchmark' proves otherwise. on a similar theme, Linux users who are familiar with 're-nicing' have the ability to fine tune the speed of any non-interrupt processes with greater control than that offered by say Windows. also whilst 64-bit OS's are faster than 32-bit and thus good for WCG - not getting 64-bit drivers for hardware (eg. tv cards - sound cards) outweighs this speed advantage from a users perspective. wrt. system resources does anyone know of a linux distro that runs 'BOINC only' - surely this would be a great addition for say holiday periods or perhaps older/unused h/w? |

I don't mean to hijack the tread but I do have a question regarding Windows 7 and 64 bit BOINC.
----------------------------------------When I re-load my computer to Windows 7 I plan on loading the 64 bit version. If I load the 64 bit version of BOINC from the BOINC website, will I be able to control that device through the WCG website and get credit through my existing account?
