Re: Computers used for crunching...

In all fairness it's a bit early to get an i7. There's some pretty cool new features but you definitely pay for them.

I'm looking to replace an old socket 939 Athlon. I know it will cost a little more, but whenever I buy a new mobo/CPU combo, I try to get something near-cutting edge that will last several years. With a socket 1366 mobo, I should be able to keep it for a while and possibly upgrade the processor a couple of times before retiring it. I'm willing to pay a little more for longevity. I'm definitely not talking about $500+ for a mobo and $1000 for an i7-975 extreme.

hmm, well that's reasonable.
but yeah, definatly not the $1000 one, it's just a huge increase and only for a few more ghz..

Re: Computers used for crunching...

Regarding the I7 I thought it was amazing for crunching. I thought I would compare my computers and see which were getting the most points per watt of power used. I measured how much power it was drawing from the socket and divided the power used by the cores (threads) used. I was quite suprised with the results. My laptop which has a T9300 processor was doing more crunching per watt than the I7920. What is even more impressive is that I have the processor set to 65% in the power options and the fan hardly makes a noise at all. Here are my figures if anyone is interested. Granted it doesn't give you a comparison for the cost of the hardware but I thought it might be useful.

cheers

Four cores seem to have some loss in efficiency. I couldn't get numbers from long time period, so just picked one day for each randomly. Actually what explains this difference, is the GPU that might add the extra watts (ati 2600pro vs 8800gts).

E4400 @ ~2.6GHz -- PPH: 89.33 -- 30W -- PPW: 2.98
Q6600 @ 3.0GHz -- PPH: 136.93 -- 52,5W -- PPW: 2.61

What is even more impressive is that I have the processor set to 65%

I have used 90 % setting for my machines. Maybe these measurements should be done with BOINC at 100 % load and with full one hour monitoring, at least.. Also my power meter should show mostly 15 % too low power consumption, so the meter isn't accurate either.

edit. Good thing you noticed.. I don't always remember which parts I replaced recently blushing

Re: Computers used for crunching...

Just to clarity. My wattage figure for my previous post is for the total system not just the processor. Obviously the mobile chipsets and more power efficient graphics cards make a difference.

cheers

Question to someone with an i7, does Boinc crunch 8 task or 4 task at a time ?

not sure how HT is handled by boinc ...

Thanks

Re: Computers used for crunching...

An i7 will crunch 8 WUs at a time if HT is turned on.

Re: Computers used for crunching...

thanks

Is it taking more time to finish one WU if it is doing 8 vs 4 ?

I need to change one of my computer and I am not sure if i7 920 is worth it
( 75% of computer use is WCG, other 25% is HTPC )

Re: Computers used for crunching...

A little more time but still faster than most other processors (definately much faster than the average). Having HT turned on processes a lot more work than if you turned HT off on an i7. I have an i7 which I have overclocked and currently I am getting about 30,000 WCG points per day.
