Handheld devices

Looking to the future, small handheld devices may eclipse the laptop and desktop.

Will the grid run on any such devices today? If so which ones? It may help with future puchasing decisions.

Just imagine if the trendy advertisments for one of these nifty devices happened to mention that owners could be part of something like WCG! Wouldn't that be good?

Maybe in five to ten years.

. . . in the meantime, desktops will rule the grid.

I've tried running BOINC on an Intel Atom netbook, and it was an exercise best classified as mouse milking [an activity where the result was hardly worth the effort expended].

The requirement for raw processor power, dual, quad and octo cores, ram memory space, 64-bit processing and the GPU revolution rule out battery powered, handheld devices.

Re: Handheld devices

laughing Great witty and experienced answer - thanks that puts the crunching power of that device ilk in perspective.

You get more crunching power with that same money you spend on an intel atom based netbook. After all, computing power of an atom chip is equivalent to Athlon chips five years ago... More bigger problem are the batteries, as the long standby time is essential for portable devices, your battery will be empty when you actually need your device. Battery technology hasn't improved much in recent years, we'll see if it ever will.

cheers

Thats very helpful and technically correct. Agreed. Thanks.

I am interested in putting modest old equipment to good use in years to come.

We power laptops from the external DC supply, always doing so when the gridware runs. Hopefully that would continue with a handheld device. If the software could detect the power source that would be useful while still in service.
We may find that oneday processing power is more diluted over more handhelds anyway, so later still when they become old they might make up a proportion of the grid. Lets hope they can take external power and detect when its applied so they can be put to use when retired.
