Not authorized error message

After the latest Windows XP upgrade, when I start the BOINC manager I get an error message as it tries to connect. The message is "You currently are not authorized to manage the client. Please contact your administrator to add you to the 'boinc_users' local user group".

I have administrator privileges on my computer.

Help!

Re: Not authorized error message

Hi Roger,

Sorry so much, seems everyone missed your post 6 months ago, coming to the surface with the new "unanswered" filter. Probably the long silence was assumed as a sign that you overcame the problem. Now looking at your stats though, your last result was 577 hours ago. Did another problem develop? We really like to help you to get crunching again.

cheers

Re: Not authorized error message

I don't know if has solved his problem but I seem to have the same.
I recently reinstalled my computer (WinXP Home) and switched from regularly running it as admin to normal user, just to be on the safe side.

Now I can't get Boinc running. It's the same error message, and I already tried deinstalling the software (ver 6.2.28) and installing a previous version (5.something.something). This offered me a "shared installation" which didn't work either.
So... help?

Re: Not authorized error message

hi,

For 6.2.28, uninstall and reinstall again [from the administrator account or right click installer to select execution as administrator which is possible in Vista/W7], select the service/restricted box AND Allow all users boxes [need to hit the advanced button, right bottom if the field is blank and grayed out].

The data directory should NOT to be within the C:\Program Files\ structure. The default shown here is a perfect choice for XP, Vista and Windows 7

Note to self: Think I'm going to catch installer screenshots of the steps that also show the Advanced button for 5.10.45, 6.2.28, 6.10.xx

Re: Not authorized error message

I did as you said, changed the data directery to C:\Cache\BOINC just to be sure, still no luck.
If I start WCG on my standard profile the error message says: "You don't have the rights to run this application. Ask your administrator to add you to the local user group "boinc_users" to remedy this." Or somesuch.

Re: Not authorized error message

[Update]
I recently noticed Boinc is running if the screensaver is on, regardless of the active profile. It even transfers data.
However, background processing still doesn't work in my regular profile.

Don't you want to have BOINC run when the screensaver is on? Can be done in order to allow activation of the power saving features in the computer and OS [ACPI it's called]

Is Run based on preferences selected in the Activity menu?

It even transfers data.

If computing is suspended, then networking is also suspended. Yes, the screensaver is the screensaver, regardless if BOINC is computing or not, so it will show BOINC, but there should be no computing taking place. If you've configured it that way.

If you want background processing to take place, you have to set the appropriate options of course such as the schedule and mouse / keyboard sensitivity and of course from a manager instance that is authorized to change the settings.
However, background processing still doesn't work in my regular profile.

The way I read your post in ending, background processing is working when screensaver is on, but not when off... then Run based on Preferences is selected in the client I'd think, something you cannot set in any of the website device profiles.

Re: Not authorized error message

Thanks for your swift answer!
I don't know if you read my previous posts, but let me reiterate my problem:

Boinc does not run in the background when I'm working on my regular, non-admin profile. It runs, and updates, when the screensaver is running. I don't have a problem with that in itself but I would like Boinc to run in the background while I'm active on the PC. This is not the case when I'm logged in into my regular profile.
To be honest, I forgot all about setting preferences. I just did and will give an update on the situation in a few days at most.

Re: Not authorized error message

It works now. Boinc runs all the time (as I wanted it to), regardless of the active profile. I think I'll be able to live with the message the client icon in the taskbar is telling me ("Not connected to a client") and regard it as a lying liar who lies raised eyebrow

PS: I was speaking of the user profiles on my computer, not the project profiles.
