Hello everyone,
thinking about how to spread the world with BOINC, I think that it would be a good thing to make a list of technical reasons why institutions, that have been contacted and asked to install BOINC refused to do so. Having such a list, it would be easier to direct the developpers efforts into the right direction. I ask for feedback. Does anyone have expierinces with institutions that refused to install BOINC? What reasons did they give? Is it true, that in most cases security reasons cause institutions not to install BOINC? I am aware, that BOINC itself is safe, but for some, probably a lot of people safe is just simply not downloading anything automatically. But this is just a guess. I open this thread to find out more about the technical reasons not(!) to install BOINC and help developers /programmers to eliminate them. Giving the name of the institution and the reason why it has refused to install BOINC it would be a good thing the give the number of computers the institution has. The more computers the better. Greetings Martin |

WCG demanded an Extra Save than Save from BOINC, so SSL was added by Berkeley and this project -still- the only one so far employing it.
----------------------------------------WCG has a presentation paper on why it's save, think it's on the marketing tool page of WCG. That will eliminate allot of why people might think it's not save. It's package has a number of settings that corporate contributors required before joining, such as it only looking for the WCG kit, disabling advanced view, anonymizing contact info (no device name, no IP data) and a few things more. WCG also interacts and works with large organizations in efforts to get them to volunteer, but I understand it's an extreme hard-sell. There are a few though that are here and now and a few that might be joining in the future, low key. Have you looked over at Berkeley on any such existing documentation? Added: A short FAQ on security: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=19467 It's not what you asked for, still. Oh, WCG is drumming the door, and they have a very tough time convincing them boardroom members. No, I don't think they would share names of institutions or companies that would not, maybe reasons. Names are sensitive information i.e. few companies will tell with whom they had sales contacts.
