I have World Community Grid Boinc Manager, Boinc client and Boinc Client taskbar icon set to start up automatically on Windows. Recently at startup a window displaying text is opening. If I close the window, it also exits the program. How do I prevent this window opening - it didn't do this before? I do still want the program to start automatically ...

Hello paulderdash,
I am going to guess that you are running on Vista, so you will be slightly different from my Windows XP setup. If you go to your Start Menu, you should see something like "C:\Program Files\BOINC\boincmgr.exe" /s If the /s (silent mode) is missing, then you would get behavior of the sort that you report. What is in your Start Menu? Lawrence |

Hi Lawrence
I am running Windows XP SP3. How do I set boincmgr to run in silent mode? Paul |

paulderdash, it sounds like you have been trying to do some custom configuration - or possibly you are confusing boinctray.exe with the taskbar icon. They are completely unrelated, and the name is just stupid. The tray icon is part of BOINC Manager, and is represented by the boincmgr.exe process.
We don't recommend you try to customise the startup yourself. Our recommended installation method is here: http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/Installation_(Vista) |

Hi Didactylos
I have not changed any configuration that I am aware of ... btw I am running XP. Yes I have the BOINC Manager icon in my system tray - was just wondering how to prevent the boinc.exe window opening. I have tried un/reinstalling (with defaults) but it still happens. It only started recently, and does not happen on my work laptop (also XP). Paul |

paulderdash, the directions are identical for XP.
Did you use the service install option? We strongly recommend you do so. The only way you could get a boinc.exe window opening is if you mistakenly added it to one of the startup mechanisms in Windows. Lawrence's advice is for BOINC Manager, which isn't relevant to your problem (if your description is correct). |

Sorted - thanks for sorting out my issue. I uninstalled and then reinstalled with the service option (required going into into 'Advanced' to select the service install).
