Hi all: If I switched my main computer to a 64 bit version of windows (either XP Pro or a VISTA version), would I get A boost in work processed?

The WCG custom client is only provided in 32 bit ;>)
----------------------------------------(Even if you have a 64 bit client, you'll see that the Whetstone part [flops] of the Benchmark is practically the same as for the 32 bit client... there is no advantage ;>) Due a high integer number of calculations for Help Conquer Cancer these actually do run faster on 64 bit OSses (The Dhrystone portion of the client benchmark).

Like sekrob said, since no there's no 64 bit client there's no big bonus but it does speed up the help conquer cancer work units considerably.

Can someone please give us the numbers ? I have a 64-bit OS but I never use it ... maybe I can use it if it really speed up this project...

For HCC I used to say 25-30 % faster (after serious testing).
----------------------------------------For other projects there is still a variable bonus depending on how often they use integer numbers (a few percents faster). I also think that there could be a benefit from faster/more efficient access to RAM, but that would need to be confirmed by HW gurus. The bottom line is that you have nothing to lose in any case, you can only benefit from the switch if you already have a 64-bit machine. More or less. Cheers. Jean. |
