Re: Download blocked, should I abort?

www.ibm.com resolves to 129.42.58.216

If your computer attempts to make a communication with the World Community Grid and that connection fails for some reason, it will then attempt to make a request to a different server to validate internet connectivity (in order to determine if World Community Grid is down or whether the computer does not currently have access to the internet). The default BOINC client from Berkeley will communicate with www.google.com. We have modified this to check against www.ibm.com.

This is what is happening when you see this line in your log file:

14-May-2009 19:57:36 [---] Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
14-May-2009 19:57:36 [World Community Grid] Temporarily failed download of dddt.13.dat.gzb: HTTP error
14-May-2009 19:57:36 [World Community Grid] Backing off 1 hr 9 min 36 sec on download of dddt.13.dat.gzb
14-May-2009 19:59:33 [---] Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

Reference Site = www.ibm.com
Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down. = Communications with www.ibm.com were ok - the problem exists with communication to World Community Grid servers.

Can you please add the following to your cc_config.xml log file:

<file_xfer_debug>1</file_xfer_debug>
<http_debug>1</http_debug>
<http_xfer_debug>1</http_xfer_debug>

I'd like to see what is going on with that file transfer. These additional logging options will add a lot more detail to what is going on.

thanks,
Kevin

Re: Download blocked, should I abort?

Well, that makes sense. Still, they appear to have reverse DNS disabled and neither its primary name (www.ibm.com.cs186.net) nor www.ibm.com was appearing in the proxy's monitor - only the IP (as I said, I didn't have logging for that machine set to a high-enough level, so all that was showing looking back on those logs was an HTTP request, with no request details)... and while either URL or the IP open in a browser with no problem, traces to either URL or that IP die from where I am.

et cetera to end of TTL

I'll note those instructions for tweaking cc_config.xml in case I need to increase BOINC's logging resolution in the future, but as I noted up there in msg# 230085, I already aborted the transfer.
The WU name was dddt1302a0027_ 100051_ 0--

https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/devi...us.do?workunitId=70238978
is the URL I get in Results Status, but I don't know if that's accessible to everyone.

BOINC wouldn't download more work for that machine while that was sitting in the queue, that machine was nearly done with its last WU, and I had to leave... so I aborted it on the Transfers tab and BOINC immediately downloaded 3 or 4 more work units.

Thanks again, and sorry I couldn't provide more details. straight face
