Hello,
looking for a cheap and fast computer for Boinc I found a Bell precision workstation with two processors. I wanted to install linux on the workstation, but the computer refuses to acept linux. I cannot install it. Are there any other crunchers running BOINC on workstations? Which operating system do you use? I strongly prefer open source, because having spent money on the workstation I do not want to spend more money on an operating system. The computer was a used one, not a new one so it was quite affordable. Thanks for any help. If I manage to run the workstation with BOINC, there will be a lot of addtional CPU time for World community grid. Yours Martin |

Not really in the right forum but anyway:
I assume you mean a Dell Precision workstation. I can't imagine why Linux wouldn't run on that, cause they are basically standard pc's. If I look on the Dell website they currently even sell Dell precision workstations with Red Hat Linux pre-installed. |

Hello,
you are right, maybe the wrong forum. But as I will run the machines only for BOINC, maybe someone could help me. Here is the link to the description of the problem: http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/ubuntu-auf-...ion-install/#post-1973678 Thank you very much for any hint. Witout it, I cannot run BOINC on the fast machines I bought. Greetings Martin |

I've loaded Centos 5 on a Dell before without any problem, maybe you should switch Linux OS flavors?

A quick google on the error message you posted in the other forum leads to several possible causes:
1. Installation DVD has burn defects 2. DVD drive is somewhat broken (solved by replacing DVD drive) 3. DVD drive mode detection not working correctly (was solved by forcing the correct mode in the bios) https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/10811 4. IDE/SCSI controller driver not bundled in (or not the correct version anyway) with the Ubuntu installation DVD (I assume you can force Ubuntu to load additional drivers during installation like you can on windows) Plenty of options to investigate. You'd need to know more about the exact hardware AND the exact error messages to say anything more though (the Dell Precision name was used for dozens of different hardware configurations) |

Hello,
I am happy that I can tell you, the Problem with the Dell machine is solved. It is crunching. Strange is, that the CPU usage is going up and down like a rollercoaster from 30% to 100% and back again. The machine has two CPUs. I work with the web-based BOINC configuration and gave 100% CPU usage as goal. Maybe this is a bottleneck effect? If someone knows how to get rid of this, I would be pleased. Yours Martin |

One possibility is that you also have set a local preference.
Go to Advanced > Preferences. If you have local preferences you should be seeing a notice message of this, telling you to click Clear to restore the webbased settings. Btw, how did you solve it? |

Hello,
I solved the basic problem, because I found out, that I simply had put a DVD in CD drive. When I used a newly made CD with an Ubutun downloaded form the net, I could install UBUNTU. The question with the rollercoaster CPU usage is unsolved, but right now because at the moment I do not have time to do it. Anyway, thank you for any help. See you Martin |

See what happens if you switch the My Grid > Device Manager > Device Profile pre-set from whatever (Standard probably) to Maximum Output. Then hit update in the BOINC Manager Project tab to force the option across to the client.
