I queue as minimal as possible... 0.1 day. I too only queue 0.1 days worth. They don't get moldy that way. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 7, 2009 10:06:42 PM] |

I too only queue 0.1 days worth. They don't get moldy that way. Also, whenever a new project arrives, you won't have loads of WU's to progress (or, as it seems quite a few people do - dump), before you start striving for your new badge Personally, I feel that those that "offload (abort) current WU's so that they can start on a new project", just emphasises the fact that they're "badge hunters". The best way, is as you do - keep a minimal buffer if you're ever tempted to jump between projects. Don't get me wrong, I also like having the recognition that my computer has contributed x days CPU to a project - although I am patient enough to let my current buffer empty before I start on the next project. |

I queue as minimal as possible... 0.1 day. This is as minimal as reasonable. Zero is allowed in any of both fields ruling the queue size and the extra work parameter can be set to 0.01 (~15 mn) if you can tolerate a shortage from time to time... Regarding overloaded queues I don't think that badges are the main motivation. There were already people working like that before the badges and these people do the same on other grids where there are no badges. Most often these people say that they don't want their machines to be idle (network problems or WU shortage), but except for those who would have a very poor network quality, servers unavailability at WCG seldom last more than a few hours (5-6 is already a major incident at WCG and it is exceptional), same for unannounced WU shortage on a given project. And there is the "send me work for other projects" box that can be checked for cases where all your preferred projects would run dry. Queuing as many tasks as possible is penalizing reasonable crunchers who will have to wait for their results to get validated, and it overloads the servers who will have to keep much more WUs than necessary in their databases. When these members are aborting all their queues for whatever reason the only prejudice for the servers is the redistribution of these WUs and the associated download time. Otherwise other members who waited for these results have a chance that they are returned faster, and the main penalty will be on the quota of the aborters. |

I queue three to four days becasue I want to make sure I always have enough WU to process if the servers have a problem. I just got my Bronze today. I refuse to abort units just to get a badge faster so I am processing all of my queued work first before I get to the IADS WUs. After two days, I only have three machines freed up. Two of them are my fastest machines. If I had no queues like some of you, I would of had Gold by now, but it will come quick enough.
----------------------------------------After Gold, my next goal is to get 1 year of run time. I think they should give a platimum badge for that :) |

mclaver, well done for refusing to succumb to temptation and aborting WU's. Okay, you might have started the "race" slightly behind the others, although you've got a clear conscience
