Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 35 smilesmile

OK, since Jonathan blazed the trail at GPUGrid and is soon to be our "fluid computer" expert laughing , I will lead off at Milkyway_GPU. biggrin
I brought up an old machine with a Pentium D processor (Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.00GHz [x86 Family 15 Model 6 Stepping 4]
(2 processors)), 1 gig real memory and a 8500GT card (NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT (255MB) driver: 18120) and put it online. There is no work on either side but it will be ready to go when they are. cool If it will work on this low-end combo it should be a good test.

Another thought. If you do attach to the project AND are running GPUGrid, I would suspend MWGPU. BOINC is good at handling mulitiple CPU projects but I have no idea how it will handle multiple GPU projects. confused

Next week at the earliest I would think. But I expect there will be problems. Probably later. wink

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 35 smilesmile

Well, I have gotten my workout the past ten days. After spreading out about 8-10 yards of wood chips (out of the 45 I got), I built this for my daughter:

That's a picture from the store, not mine. I had to chuckle at it though. They say you need two people to build it and it will take 10-14 hours. laughing Well, I did it myself and it was probably more like about 50 hours. Along with sorting though the four boxes (plus the three pieces to the slide), I had to deal with following the instructions and then figuring out the instructions. The instructions were written somwhere in North America so they weren't as bad as some of the stories we've all heard. Still, it was mostly drawings and those left a little to be desired. They did nice things like tell you to evenly space out the uprights for example but gave no idea of what the spacing should be. Between "trial and retrial" and some head math, figured that out. Took it cautious so I was able to catch a couple of errors and problems in time. Of course, some of their pre-drilled holes didn't end up where they needed to be but the vast majority were right. Main thing is it's done. Now I can move on to the next item on the list (a very long one of course).

DM, will set MOT up on the GPU MW probably tomorrow.

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 35 smilesmile

Interesting dilemma: I have a choice between a ten gallon and a twenty gallon fishtank for my mineral oil pc. Part of me says 10 gallons should be about the right size. The other part of me says go for the 20 gallon one so you can add more mineral oil as you add components to serve as a bigger heatsink.

Thoughts?...

How much money you got? biggrin

MilkyWay Update: For you GPU crunchers, the URL for their GPU is:

http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway_gpu/

You have to attach to it as new project and use "New User" when you do. There are no wu's and the feeder is not running. I don't know when they will release them but if you want to have it ready to go ... that's how.
The message board there is not yet operation so for information use:
http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/
This is the CPU site.

@Kieth: As it is a separate project, we will need a team there. I hope they give good credits. biggrin

I say waste of money -- in my opinion.. don't do it. Buy another video card or something. tongue

Well.. dry ice and liquid nitrogen is a waste of money.. too but fun. laughing
crying

Well, the fishtanks are $20 for the 10 gallon or $30 for the 20 gallon, or $40 for both. I'm thinking both and put one inside the other, that way if there's a leak, there's double security.

And yeah, it's a waste. But the pcs are free, and if it works, it is going to be so cool looking. Who knows, maybe i'll sell it on ebay or craigslist as a novelty and use the proceeds to get a new GPU?

Actually that's a good idea. Here's the MSDS on it. Notice the part about keep away from heat and sources of ignition. biggrin Do not store over 24C (75.2F). Keith will probably hear the explosion before I do. laughing biggrin laughing

Well, it's a good project - the kind that makes you truly appreciate a nice long hot shower at the end of the day! laughing Not really all that bad. You just have to take your time, think ahead, triple check things and expect to have to redo one or two things.

Wait a minute! You want to use mineral oil to remove the heat from your machine and you're supposed to keep away from heat and flame???? laughing Oh, well, the flash point is 168.33°C (335°F) so I doubt the GPUs get THAT hot. biggrin

Since I am a conservative, I would have to pick the 10 gallon tank. You should be able to do what you need to do in 10 gallons. If you pick 20 gallons, you might expand beyond your means, and then, well you know... Obama and all....
