I just installed a GTX260. ![]() Hey DM - how's that 260 working for you? According to the "experts" 260 Core 216 is best bang for gpu buck these days, particularly if you can find one with an aftermarket cooler attached for about $170-180. I had the 260 for a while, then I bought the 275. It actually cost me less and for GPU crunching, it's walking all over the 260. The only downfall is heat. Higher clock speeds, more cores = more heat. But, I'm still keeping it cool with the stock fan. It's also using about 4 more watts than the 260. I'd stay away from the 280 and higher, though. Too expensive at this moment...
BIG BANG THEORY: In the beginning there was nothing... which exploded

I just installed a GTX260. ![]() Hey DM - how's that 260 working for you? Works great. Runs GPUGrid wu's in 7-8 hours and I have not OC'ed it yet. GPUGrid apparently fixed their problem. NEWS FLASH: It was THEIR science. The first week they would not admit they had a problem. Next two weeks it was BOINC or nVidia or both. Finally they reduced the size of the AIDS wu's (and the amount of memory required) and it now works on 8/9 series cards. I have not had a comp error since.Milkyway has their GPU code out for review (you can find it at their site). The plan is to compile it next week and then release it as beta. If I am reading it correctly, it will work on any CUDA compliant card. That should open it up to a lot more people. ![]() EDIT: Oh, I forgot to mention. If I am reading it correctly (and that's a BIG if ), there will be a new project for CUDA GPU work. CPU work will continue to come from MilkyWay@Home and CUDA GPU will come from MilkyWay_GPU@Home. They are a very small operation at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in NY. They were very intermittant first due to some large equipment upgrades and then a major power upgrade. Bandwidth issues too. That's why the seperate projects for CPU and GPU for bandwidth. They may have all the parts together now. Who knows? I plan to give it a shot. I do expect a rocky rollout as Travis seems to be chief cook and bottle washer too. ![]() ![]() |

Interesting dilemma: I have a choice between a ten gallon and a twenty gallon fishtank for my mineral oil pc. Part of me says 10 gallons should be about the right size. The other part of me says go for the 20 gallon one so you can add more mineral oil as you add components to serve as a bigger heatsink.
Thoughts?... |

How much money you got? **** MilkyWay Update: For you GPU crunchers, the URL for their GPU is: http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway_gpu/ You have to attach to it as new project and use "New User" when you do. There are no wu's and the feeder is not running. I don't know when they will release them but if you want to have it ready to go ... that's how. The message board there is not yet operation so for information use: http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/ This is the CPU site. @Kieth: As it is a separate project, we will need a team there. I hope they give good credits. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Well.. dry ice and liquid nitrogen is a waste of money.. too but fun. ![]() |
