Fake antivirus scams rake in $150m FBI warns consumers of 2009's worst scams A friend of mine just had the Internet Security 2010 on his computer. And that being said, it is not a security program but a scam. And a really bad one. I guess it is categorized just as a malware but a really annoying one. Let's just say you can't ignore it and it want's you to give it your credit card number or something... Although the best part is, my friend has Symantec av protecting his computer. It didn't notify about the threat or wasn't able to remove it. (btw. we used a free copy of Malwarebyte's anti-malware to finally get rid of it.) I don't mean to dis symantec, but my point is, that you can't fully trust av programs. That is why you should pay attention to your computer usage habits as well. cheers Mika

A friend of mine just had the Internet Security 2010 on his computer. And that being said, it is not a security program but a scam. And a really bad one. (Rolling my eyes) My daughter and I just bought copies of Norton Internet Security 2010 -- cost $9.00 after rebate. I have Norton 360 on my PC now --doesn't seem to catch all viruses. I have had very good success running Spybot Search and Destroy, and Adaware scans every once in a while -- these catch things that Norton doesn't. Spybot is free, Adaware has a free product -- Adaware also has a free trial offer for Adaware Plus -- not sure what it says -- you have to go through a TrialPay web site, and there is a lot of legal mumbo-jumbo that I don't understand to get the free Adaware Plus. Remember -- only use one product to perform real-time scans -- if more than one product is doing real-time scans at the same time, they could work against each other. Malware and equivalent programs often have similar names as real security programs. Actually they even look the same. This malware however, prevents you from starting the task manager for example.. so it is not just a malware, but more like a virus. Ad-aware and spybot are very good tools to remove tracking cookies and malware that av programs doesn't. I guess norton, symantec and the rest sell malware/spyware packege separately, named as a security suite for example.

Maybe one way to avoid scams and malware would be to buy the software as a packaged product on disk in a brick and mortar shop, instead of downloading it from god knows were.
----------------------------------------It will probably be more expensive but security has it's price. At least this is the way I proceed. ![]() ![]() |

Actually, the Norton Internet Security 2010 my daughter and I bought are the real deal. We bought it at Staples during their recent one day sale. That's right, we didn't mean it isn't. What we meant is, there are malicious programs that pretend to be security products when they aren't. And the other point being that you can't fully trust on even an authentic security product, you're still responsible on what you do with your computer. From here you find more screen shots from the scam program in question. Looks real? ![]() ![]()

Yes, NoScript is great. Used together with Adblock Plus, you will be disturbed very seldom. (We have a Firefox-Addon-Thread in the forum also, with cool tips) This one: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,9321 had no entry for longer, so let me take care of that as I've found a few new great ones... or you could :D edit: grammar

Symantec told him, after I removed it with malwarebytes like you did, that it was a known problem and that is why they are offering to remove it for 50 bucks. He canceled his subscription with them on the spot! ![]() ![]() |

It is also important prior to aa decision to surf on the internet, on the forums and see what the others have experienced with a given product. Ther are many benchmarks articles, reviews etc..
----------------------------------------You must never base your decision on one article, benchmark or opinion as a ther is a big chance that it is commerciallly biased. But if you add all of them plus user experiences after a while you will have a good idea of the pros and cons of what there is on the market. Only after that take your decision and go. You should not be very wrong with that. But every system is different so you may have a different behaviour of the security system on your specific rig. In my home since about 20 years I have build myself all the PC's that the whole family has used. Probably I built between 20 and 30 machines. We are five in total. Three kids that really put the machines to military grade test, when they were younger. After some years I standardized my PC components and the softwares used. So I have better control and less nasty effects. But it is never a guaranteed thing. ![]() |
