MINERAL OIL SUBMERGED PCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

biggrin

Young men with too much free time or scientific break thru? Cool though .... biggrin

Absolutely!

My roommate and I are contemplating this project with his 7 year old p4 2.2 ghz. Apparently you can run a pc that slow without even a radiator to dissipate heat!

I'm failing to see the purpose of such an endevor. But if it will help the cause I'd be glad to send you 3 more P4 processors I have and then you could build a P4 duo-octo in oil. biggrin

Totally senseless, but it looks cool. Ours would have a castle in it, a diver, some fake fish, lighting (on the roof of the tank, not submerged) and possibly some kind of tint/window effect. I want to steal an old discarded p4 from harvard's computer trash facility to try it out before we use my roommate pc though. It's our media pc right now.

I can't wait till my 8800's get here. This GPU crunching looks pretty cool. Too bad WGC doesn't have it yet - seems like it would really help them out.

Oh yeah - I saw esoteric17 fly by me today. Talk about some serious crunching! biggrin

Esoteric is a BEAST on WCG, but here's a secret, I actually get more boinc credits per day because of GPU crunching. Your 2 8800GTs should produce about 12k-14k ppd (points per day) together, or about the same as my 260 GTX. If you were to oc your 8800GT (VERY DOABLE!) you might see more like 14k - 15k ppd. You're right to recognize the power of parallel processing. When WCG gets GPU processing, that's when the computer power available in the grid begins to expand rapidly as people start to connect their GPUs to the grid.

I have a 260 in my main computer - it even has it's own power supply! I want to bring it on the GPU grid, but I want to try it out on these 8800's first. I got the 260 when it was new, so I paid a lot of money for it and until I can see how this works I really don't want to burn up my flag ship video card.

I'm not sure how the CPU and GPU crunching gets along on the same computer, too. So, I'm just going to start slow before my electricity bill gets any worse than it already is.

Well, we have the same cards. And so does/did Blizzie. So we're here for support. I would run the GPU machines with only 1 cpu core on if you're worried about stability/heat. Also, the loss of one processor core is nothing when you add a GPU.

Thanks for the info. I'm downloading the CUDA driver right now and might give this machine a shot at it.
Does SETI have GPU processing going on right now? Those wu's are huge and take like 60 hours to complete!

yes, but apparently it's pretty dodgy. I'd avoid it for now. I would stick with GPU GRID where we've all had success.
