Re: Add priority to projects

You know I keep hearing about these higher priorities than doing stuff like this but I never get any specification as to exactly what is more important than this aside from getting a platinum badge. Oh wow, you can show that you contributed a year on your super computer, that's great, but why is getting a few virtual pixels more important than this? I'd much rather be able to prioritize than look at a badge i'll never get. Best I could get would be bronze in all current projects. I mean not to insult people who have contributed that much, that's great, but do you really need a badge to know you did something good? I've never seen the purpose for badges.

Re: Add priority to projects

Prioritizing a) conflicts with other scheduling goals, and b) will be expensive to implement.

This has been explained before. The idea isn't dead, but it isn't as simple as people seem to think.

Re: Add priority to projects

Here are a few things higher on the list:

  • Update the forums (adds key things like sticky threads and fixes some old bugs)
  • Redesign the home page (we want to improve our conversion rate of visitors into members from press releases or other sources)
  • Move our help section into a wiki style framework. This will at least allow the CA's to help us maintain and keep them current (rather than them having to maintain threads in a 'help' forum)
  • Release Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy
  • Maintain the environment
  • Update the BOINC server code (we are approaching 12 months behind)

This is just a quick pull of some of the items higher on the list. Please note also that adding prioritization to the projects requires changes to the BOINC core code rather than just to the website. As Didactylos mentioned, the BOINC code was originally developed with the idea that 1 website would host 1 research project. We have contributed a lot of code to BOINC so that 1 website can support multiple research projects. However, this code is still not as robust as we would like so it will take some work to implement.

Re: Add priority to projects

Well thanks for that, those do seem important, and yes, I did realize that while changing the website for prioritization would be rather easy changing boinc wouldn't be so. Sorry if I sounded like a jerk in my earlier post, that day had sucked ^.^
