Folks,
Can we get real for a minute? It seems when folks here request new functionality for things such as better selection / prioritization selection for project control; the answer is they don't have sufficient resource to accommodate that request. Here, we have a thread discussing the merits of tweaking the badge system which is completely useless and consumes the resource that could be reinvested back into WCG for the benefit of everyone instead of just a few with these kinds of useless measurements. Oh, did he actually say useless measurements? He sure did. Why are they useless? They can't be used for anything; no discounts; can't deduct them from your taxes; Over time, as our systems become faster and faster with more and more cores and people have multiple systems working simultaneously on projects; the numbers will start to roll forward on the badges similar to the numbers on a slot machine after you pull the handle hoping for a jackpot. I would like to see the whole discussion about tweaking badges be locked; unhooked; and permanently banned from any further discussion. Let's get better user controls for which projects in which order we prefer to run (since we donate our systems we should be able to decide which we prefer). Good Grief, I can't imagine this topic has continued this long. |

It seems when folks here request new functionality for things such as better selection / prioritization selection for project control; the answer is they don't have sufficient resource to accommodate that request. I believe that the CAs are just being polite about the prioritization suggestion. This project would be a MEGA cost project. This might be another example of where crunchers start to plead, implore and demand changes to the system design without there being any realistic chance of the WCG staff delivering on the request. Here, we have a thread discussing the merits of tweaking the badge system which is completely useless and consumes the resource that could be reinvested back into WCG for the benefit of everyone instead of just a few with these kinds of useless measurements. Not even the CAs have suggested the badges are useless. In fact they are a key element of motivating people to join WCG. The fact that I can not buy a new NVidia card with my badges does not make them less important to WCG. What if a new badge for 180 days brought people back to WCG from SETI, PrimeGrid and Einstein? I think it would. Feel free to disagree. I would like to see the whole discussion about tweaking badges be locked; unhooked; and permanently banned from any further discussion. We can not do that because then we would have to also lock the threads on the prioritization suggestion and that would ALSO not be productive. Let's get better user controls for which projects in which order we prefer to run (since we donate our systems we should be able to decide which we prefer). We already have a simple and easy way to control the projects we choose to run. All you need to do is use it. Plus the current system is easy to support and we have precious few support resources to throw at what might turn out to be a huge and hideous support headache that would generate many support requests that all would have to be answered by the very considerate CAs. |

I just wanted to put in my 2¢
I like the idea of black badges. and in the effort of grabbing attention, but not having a tacky animation, how about a tiny shimmer, or a brief sparkle on a slow loop, maybe every 30 seconds or so for just a second or two. Something to grab attention, but not be annoying. Also, what about borders ? You could get a 1px colored border, and could just have the border change color for each additional milestone (like belt rankings in martial arts, 1 year = yellow, 2 year = green, etc..) And yes, they do mean something, I would crunch more WCG if there were more badges to get. I know they don't mean anything, but they are goals to strive for, and they make the project a bit more fun. |
