Installation fails

I'm trying to install the agent on my XP. While installing, it opens a dialog stating "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder constaining the installation package BOINC.msi in the box below", and in the box is a path to an obsolte directory under c:\windows\Downloaded installations\

This is propably because I had the older BOINC client dated back like 1 year or so. The old BOINC client is also listed on my add/remove programs list, but attempts to uninstall it result in the same dialog box as above. Obviously, I need to remove it somehow before I install the new agent.

Help ? kthx.

Re: Installation fails

The installer is looking for the msi file of that previous version. I've learned to deny overzealous disk cleaners not remove old install packets, with the exception of what lurks in ..\temp

Get Windows Install cleaner to remove the register records of the old version. That usually works.

Re: Installation fails

The easiest (and safest) way to solve this is to download the exact same installer and use it to uninstall before you install the new version.

If you can tell me which version you had, I can tell you which installer file you need. What version information is given in Add/Remove Programs? Click on "Click here for support information" and tell me the publisher and version.

Thank you.

Re: Installation fails

Sadly there's no link for support information. And I can't remember when I installed the old version, so it's impossible to tell what version it was.

I've used Ccleaner, guess it has cleaned the installer package.

Any ideas ?

Re: Installation fails

You need to click on the item in Add/Remove Programs first.

It should look like this:

Re: Installation fails

As said, suggest to get the Windows Install Cleanup tool. Works for me.

Re: Installation fails

Sorry, missed that part from your post Sekerob. Windows installer cleaner worked like a charm, thanks.

You need to click on the item in Add/Remove Programs first.

Like I said, there was no "support information" link there ...

Re: Installation fails

And now we will never know.

The Windows Installer Cleanup utility is dangerous, and leaves loose ends. I had hoped to avoid it.

Re: Installation fails

And the irony here is that the use of Ccleaner has led to a messier and more unstable system than if it had never been used.

The moral of the story? Don't use Ccleaner.

Do we take it, you succeeded in installing the new version? We hope it is the WCG 6.2.28 version (get it via the right top link on your My Grid page)

cheers
