I tried upgrading from BOINC 5.10.45 to 6.2.28. I got 6.2.28 from the WCG site. I thought that it was suppose to automatically migrate your data, but it is asking me to reattach to a project. I do not want to create a new host and loose all of my data. The version of BOINC was in a non standard directory it was in C:\boinc. Is this why the migration failed. Is there a way to upgrade without loosing data?

Salut Mitch,
----------------------------------------Do you make the installation with BOINC computing? With each update of boinc, I never lost my information nor my work, always with boinc working ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by ALAIN_13013 at Mar 21, 2009 4:39:14 PM] |

I *think* that if you copy the old "slot" folders into the new data directory you might be OK.

Not sure what you mean. 5.10 was running in a directory C:/Boinc, 6.2.28 installed in C:/program files/boinc and the data I think is in C:/programdata/boinc. What can I copy over so that I do not loose an data and create a new host?
----------------------------------------Right now I stopped 6.2.28 and manually started 5.10.45. - Mitch ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Not enough Snow Cash. The control files are the only ones that know what's in the slots such as the client_state.xml. Did it once manually and it's not for starters.
----------------------------------------Mitch, suggest to copy the whole C:\BOINC content to the new data_dir location that is identified in the new clients start up message log. There is a FAQ that identifies which files need to remain. http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?view=292 The process should have been transparent, but recently testing myself a supposed Beta level 6.6 lost me all and every single bit. If you feel like betting, rerun the 6.2.28 installer after this. It might do a clean up of surplus bits that were copied from C:\BOINC

So I followed your suggestions sort of...I copied all *.xml and *.txt over to c:\application data\boinc. I then reinstalled 6.2.28. When I brought it up every thing was suspended. After I restarted everything is working ok now. Thankyou for your help.

Humm,
----------------------------------------if don't matter for you just WCG projects and you are a GPU user and have interest to crunch GPU projects (SETI, GPU.GRID, etc) under same BOINC client, there are more options to try (but be aware that aren't WCG official BOINC clients releases, so if you adopt anyone over 6.2.28 you don't have WCG support for nothing...). Personally, in last year I used more high levels releases without any problem until now, and adoptedit just due need of GPU usage with BOINC, and from times to times I upgrade for more high ones (but basically picking up a lot of tips inside BOINC forums before adopt new ones, to avoid mistakes and some bad releases...). By now I'm using 6.5 level in one machine, and 6.4.5 in other. If you would like to try, take a look at: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/?C=M;O=D ![]()

The WCG 6.2.28 package has a default startup delay of 2 minutes showing as "Suspend" in the tasks view of BOINC Manager. This is to help speed up system booting. cheers
