Against my own adage: "Don't fix what is not broken", I installed SuSE 11.1 and BOINC 6.2.18 which actually was in the SuSE repository. Things worked fine at the beginning, but the last couple of days things seem to get out of hand, meaning nothing works.
Here is the message log which I am getting after a reboot: Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:33:08 AM EDT||Starting BOINC client version 6.2.18 for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:33:08 AM EDT||log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:33:08 AM EDT||Libraries: libcurl/7.19.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8h zlib/1.2.3 libidn/1.10 Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:33:08 AM EDT||Data directory: /usr/bin Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:33:08 AM EDT||Processor: 2 AuthenticAMD AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4600+ [Family 15 Model 75 Stepping 2] Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:33:08 AM EDT||Processor features: fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 ht syscall nx mmxext fxsr_opt rdtscp lm 3dnowext 3dnow rep_good nopl pni cx16 lahf_lm cmp_legacy svm extapic cr8_legacy Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:33:08 AM EDT||OS: Linux: 2.6.27.19-3.2-default Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:33:08 AM EDT||Memory: 2.91 GB physical, 2.01 GB virtual Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:33:08 AM EDT||Disk: 19.69 GB total, 14.29 GB free Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:33:08 AM EDT||Local time is UTC -4 hours Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:33:08 AM EDT||No coprocessors Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:33:09 AM EDT|World Community Grid|URL: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/; Computer ID: 855981; location: (none); project prefs: default Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:33:09 AM EDT||General prefs: from World Community Grid (last modified 14-Dec-2006 08:45:50) Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:33:09 AM EDT||Host location: none Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:33:09 AM EDT||General prefs: using your defaults Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:33:09 AM EDT||Reading preferences override file Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:33:09 AM EDT||Preferences limit memory usage when active to 1490.49MB Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:33:09 AM EDT||Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 2682.89MB Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:33:09 AM EDT||Preferences limit disk usage to 3.73GB Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:40:59 AM EDT|World Community Grid|Sending scheduler request: To fetch work. What I don't understand at all is the last line of the message. It takes GiB addiditional disk spaces alloted to the WCG project to bring this number down fractionally. Would some guru please explain what I am doing wrong. Thank you very kindly. |

/usr/bin is a poor choice of data directory. Well, that's the directory SuSE installed it into and it worked at for a couple of weeks. So, why all this this song and dance that there is no work available and how much disk space will BOINC need to get it going again? Could you be a bit more specific as to why /usr/bin/ is a bad choice. One last question: If I reinstall BOINC what version whould you recommend. Thank you for taking time to reply. |

Hello 39er,
----------------------------------------indeed /usr/bin is a poor choice, because that is the directory for the standard system binaries in a Unix system (similar to \windows\... on a M$ system). Usually, it is much better to choice as directory for your application data something like /home/boincdata If you start using and operating a Unix based system, you should take some free hours for reading a good book about Unix/Linux in order to understand how the system is structured, and how it is running. After that, you will surely enjoy to use it. Cheers, Yves |

Hello 39er,
/usr/bin/ has a number of files in it. BOINC will measure the size of the files in the data directory and decide whether or not to run BOINC. If your directory limit is smaller than the size of the files in /usr/bin/ then BOINC will never run. You need to use a special BOINC directory that has nothing but BOINC in it for a data directory. Merci Yves,
I have been dabbling in Linux for awhile now but not seriously enough to have nightmares over it. However I do appreciate you taking the time to help me to recall what I read before. Once a computer runs here I just dust it from time to time as Linux is a great candidate for running for ever without crashing. My main hobby is actually ham radio and photography. To make a long story short, Yves, I deleted the BOINC version, supplied by SuSE distro and freshly installed a 64 bit version from the BOINC website - and yes, I installed it as part of my home directory. It chucks away quite happily at the moment. Salut from Canada to Switzerland, I am originally from Germany. -39er (aka. Heribert) |

Lawrence Good stuff Lawrence, Another of my questions answered based on insider knowledge. As I pointed out in a previous reply, I reinstalled BOINC now in its own directory. So things are humming along fine here. Thank you for your reply and have a good evening from your neighbor up north. -39er |

39er, the log you posted first at the very end says you had 9gb too much in there. The 2 critical lines in the log were:
----------------------------------------Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:33:09 AM EDT||Preferences limit disk usage to 3.73GB and Mon 16 Mar 2009 11:53:35 AM EDT|World Community Grid|Message from server: The preference you set for maximum disk space used by BOINC has been exceeded by 9224.86 MB. Old foxes at the game read the log, though I do not know how old lawrencehardin is ;-)
